The greatest movie ever made.

Very misguided but strangely watchable misfire. Prince mimics all of the visual tricks from stylish MTV clips of the respective time period reasonably well, but it is just another tired vanity project from a thoroughly self absorbed artist with delusions of grandeur. Although in his defence, he was actually talented and had an aura of 'otherness' about him, unlike the charisma vacuums that characterise the contemporary pop landscape/wasteland.

The pacing is wack, but the aesthetic is fun and vibrant, eschewing modern film conventions to make a classic studio back lot musical. The camera and lightwork exemplify the type of perfectionist control Prince sought over all of his work, so the playful but manufactured feel of the film play into that. If it weren't for the dreadful crawl I'd rate this much higher.
