C. Eastwood is not too old for being an actor. Great movie of him, a role of rascist that he played perfectly well, one of his best movies. A movie that is very enjoyable for everyone : action, drama and a comedy. I must confess a surprisingly end.

One of the funniest movies I've ever seen. It's so unbelievably racist that I found myself just laughing hysterically. There are numerous shots of asians/blacks and then it will cut to Eastwood and he will just bitch about them. So great. I have to believe that this is Clint's response to Spike Lee accusing him of being a racist, and saying fuck you. "There's a mexican, a jew and a colored guy that go into a bar. The bartender looks up at them and says, "get the fuck outta here."" Gold.

Gran Torino is one of the better films I have seen in a long while. Clint Eastwood's character Walt Kowalski is one big bad ass, and this is where Gran Torino shines. Eastwood portrays one of the most memorable characters not only of his career, but in the past decade. Sure this film has its flaws, most notably the younger actors, but there is no denying the power of this film. This film throws you stereotype after stereotype, and slur after slur, and you know what, I love every second of it.

The acting is seriously atrocious other than Clint, and the plot is rife with cliche and contrivances. It's all the ingredients for a bad movie, but then someone threw in some Clint and it got awesome. Dude just glowers and growls and spits out badass racist one liners at every step. There's actually a degree of subtlety to the movie, but that's not what I want to talk about here. The moral of the story is also my new favorite catchphrase. Got a bad movie? "FUCK IT, THROW IN SOME CLINT."

No one above, no one even close to on par with Clint Eastwood. Even though the movie has problems (most obviously the young actors), Clint's presence overrules it. It's one of those rare movies, where you recognize all the faults, all the racial slurs, and just end up going "So what?". It somehow all gels. The Clint just growls, snares, hates, asskicks and supremely rules his way through the entire movie. How often do you see a 78 year old and think "He's just so damn cool"?

Clint here plays the kind of "working class hero" who only exists in the fantasies of peasants who cling desperately to the illusion that their state is the only desirable one... then thrusts the character into a more complex story than you might expect. This movie invites comparisons to Kurosawa's _Ikiru_, yet measures up to them quite well

I was a bit skeptical about how 2009 would unfold, after peeking at some of the releases. However, this has completely swept me off my feet. Although very racist (In a humourous, out-of-nowhere way), Gran Torino is probably the best Eastwood has to offer in a long time. He both mentally and physically in the acting and directing apartments, succeeds like no other. He offers one of the most solid performances ever, delivering all of his lines with passion. However: rest of the actors = ugh

Eastwood amazingly loses absolutely no steam with age. Is it me, or do his films just keep getting better..? Anyway, this is really good, and it's somewhat appalling that it was not at least nominated for some Academy Awards. I find it pretty amazing that someone after having made brilliant films over the course of 50 years can still produce something this good. Hats off to Eastwood. Gran Torino has a few flaws, such as somewhat clumsy acting by everyone non-Eastwood, but it's all forgivable.

Move over Crash, G.T has taken your crown as king of cheese. Way to heavy handed in its approach in showing racism and in fact its heavy handedness is apparent throughout the movie. White youth is obviously thoughtless and self centered, Black/Latino youth are represented by three gang bangers, And Asians for the most part are essentially helpless until Ol' Eastwood rides up on his horse and gives them a hand. Clint also sings the song over the end credits, fucking insane.

Crap acting, cringe-worthy dialogue and a cliched plot; without Eastwood's presence and delivery this would have been unwatchable. He's great fun here, elevating every perfunctory slur and snarling quip, whilst conjuring depth of characterisation from a shallow script. Deliberate pacing is usually Eastwood's strongest directorial feature, but here it feels slow as each plot turn is telegraphed from miles away. An edit with his ranting and a few reaction shots would be gold.

Clint Eastwood and the barber are both fantastic. The priest is decent but almost everyone else offers a seriously subpar acting performance for a Hollywood film. However Eastwood as Walt is so funny and so passionate that he makes the film completely worth watching. As long as you're able to sit through essentially two hours of a massive variety of racial slurs then this film is certainly worth seeing.

Not without some virtues. Some scenes are more complex and subtle than the opening of the movie causes one to expect, and the director is not afraid to take his time where necessary. But too many of the scenes are clunky, and, overall, the film is very conventional. Mildly amusing if the flaws are overlooked.

A surprisingly scathing send-up of Eastwood's iconic image, but the desire to be taken seriously dulls the effectiveness of its camp. Still, just as Unforgiven represented an apologia for his westerns, this works as one for his vigilante films. And it's pretty damn hilarious, too.

Clint Eastwood returns yet again with a strong performance in this dramatic coming-of-age tale that portrays Kowalski's own development alongside the growth of the young characters who come to inhabit his lifelong neighborhood. Aside from the excruciatingly horrific acting of Ahney Her, this film is able to rise above many similar pictures with an unexpectedly strong ensemble and a beautifully mixed score. While it has its cheesy moments, it manages to be moving in its own distinctive manner.

There's some novelty to the crazy, racist, war-veteran old-guy-badass as a protagonist, but it eventually wears off when you see the same 2 minute close-up of yet another growling scowl. There are some excellent scenes, but the story is filmed and structured in such a conventional fashion that Gran Torino eventually becomes a film to laugh at, instead of appreciate.

A film desperately lacking subtlety. Kowalski is a pretty cliche archetype taken to the extreme, and as a director Eastwood hams up the film's racial and generational themes. The script borders on ludicrous, and the acting is stiff and unnatural. The exception there is Eastwood, as even old age can't diminish his screen presence.

Clint Eastwood = Bad Ass and Hilarious in this movie. As long as you don't take humorous racism seriously this movie can be pretty f*cking hilarious. And as this movie began to unfold I was expecting a pretty weak ending, but the ending was absolutely flawless/perfect. It's one of the few movies that I can't wait for to come out on dvd as soon as I leave the theater. Thinking about Gran Torino after the fact makes me wonder what it is that made me even think it was good in the first place. Gran Torino is a wonderfully fitting film for Eastwood's front of camera career to end with. Walt Kowalski is an amalgamation of so many of Eastwoods past characters. Kowalski could almost be Dirty Harry in retirement, or The Man With No Name, transplanted into the modern day, with a pension book! This film isn't subtle, but Clint is brilliant, & if your willing to overlook some dodgy moments as far as the supporting cast go, & a little bit of a sloppy dialogue, then Gran Torino is a treat.

Clint manages superior direction as usual and allows for great humor and emotion to sneak in from his character Walt Kowalski, a Korean war veteran with a stiff glare, haunted past and a family that doesn't much know him. Clint, deserving another Best Actor nomination here, scores a lot of good lines and holds our interest in a fascinating drama for a character that salutes the Dirty Harry of past. With this film and "Changeling," Mr. Eastwood has scored two of the year's ten best films.

Eastwood is good as a disgruntled war vet, often proving awkwardly funny with his racist tirades. His directing is solid, very similar visually to "Million $ Baby." The rest of the cast is mediocre though, save for the young girl next door. A few uneven scenes offset the overall pace, but the ending is pretty appropriate. However, five or six points get knocked off the overall score due to the badly timed and bizarre inclusion of Eastwood singing a little farewell serenade as the credits start.

It's pretty amazing how this films message as mostly an anti-violence movie goes against how Eastwood got started in the business with violent movies. Racism, growing old, death (both impending and to loved ones), family values and religion are all key parts of this film and makes it probably Eastwood's most complete film as a director. You have to give props for Eastwood going with real Hmong people to play the Hmong characters even though most had never acted before and it showed.

Wow was this bad, primarily the writing, but also the oft-mentioned bad acting from the supporting players. The screenplay though is atrocious. What was a good idea for a film became a campy, comic classic with Eastwood's constant growl. Mostly though, I hate it when characters explain what's going on in the film, rather than the film simply showing it to the audience. And why do all the Asians like to hang out so much with a racist pig, without ever reacting AT ALL to his insults? Mind-blowing.

Really not that great a film, but merely a very competently made one. However, the film represents how we all hold on to things, sometimes for too long. It is also quite affecting in it appears to be the last screen role for a film legend in front of and possibly behind the camera. One of the major faults of the film is that many of the cast members other than Eastwood plainly can't act all that well.

First off, I wasn't expecting the level of black comedy present. There's a lot of laugh-worthy lines involving racist jokes that could've been stupid or uncomfortable but end up working great. And the ending came out of nowhere to me, not in a way that was inconsistent, but in a way I didn't see coming, and it made it more powerful. Maybe my Clint bias is rosily shading my judgment, but I really liked this. It's not without flaw, but its strengths are significant.

In lesser hands than Clint Eastwood's, the screenplay for Gran Torino could have been the blueprint for a mawkish cliché storm, but he turns it into one of 2008's sublime entertainments; an applause-worthy spectacle of political incorrectness, black comedy, unapologetic badassery, and Eastwood growling his way to one of the best (and perhaps the most purely entertaining) performances of his career.

In a way, an interesting companion piece to Unforgiven: both utilize Eastwood's machismo popular image as a means to explore the origins and nature of today's culture of pervasive violence. First of all, I do not think the film is racist; all the characters are deeply scarred and express their hatred through "talk" and not "walk," and it is through an irony in this that the villains end up losing. The film is marred by cliche, acting and Eastwood singing his own theme song.

I find it facinating that clint eastwood was in his late 70's during the making of this movie, but every little bit of romanticism and the entire spirit of the western genre he helped to create is completely alive. This time he does it with finesse, emotion, and sensibility that will appeal to every audience. It's strangely raw, and at times crude, but never once does the viewer doubt Eastwood's qualifications.

Probably Eastwood's best in the last decade. Takes the best parts from Million Dollar Baby & Mystic River about past burdens and religion weighing down the mind etc, adds lots of tension and puts in a stellar performance himself. The racial tensions weren't too fake or moralistic either, which is a plus. I think what sets it apart is that the characters are believable and real, and their on screen interactions are spot on. I think with GT Eastwood achieves his vision in film making.

A story about a retired veteran who is sick of watching his neighborhood deteriorate and be ruled by drug dealers. When a neighbor kid tries to steal his car, he foils the attempt. When the boy is threatened by local violence, he stands up to it, but not without a cost. A cautionary tale of vigilantism.

I'm giving this a fairly generous score because I think that under the surface, Eastwood is hinting at some interesting ideas about his character's redemption. Unfortunately, Eastwood seems determined to smother and subvert these interesting themes with audience-pleasing, familiar melodramatic devices and ostentatious one-liners. Furthermore, the way race is handled throughout the film, while well-meaning, is quite bothersome to me, and I don't think it's going to age very well.

IMO, this movie gets high scores for Eastwood's acting, and the story's theme of self-reliance and self-responsibility, two themes I'd love to see more of in film. The film lost points for really pretty bad acting on almost all supporting characters, and for the overuse of "the F word." What redeems Eastwood and his film, lending it, for all its entertainment value, a sense of gravity and personal conviction, is simply its place in line in his ongoing penance for the offhand violence, the incalculable casualties, of his earlier career: its place behind _Unforgiven_, _A Perfect World_, _Mystic River_, etc. Once was not enough. It was not just lip service, like an obligatory number of Hail Marys after a long-postponed trip to confession.

Eastwood rules both the screen and the director's chair in what will probably be his final major role, meaning Gran Torino always going to be a mostly one man affair. I'm glad to say it proves to be a rather fitting end to a great and somewhat varied acting career. Although many of the surrounding cast aren't really up to much, the quality of Eastwood's performance mostly compensates. If you're expecting a typical shoot-em-up Clint Eastwood movie here, you'll be pleasantly surprised. For the most part, Gran Torino is light-hearted and cute, and very mesmerizing to watch. Then again, it's got that Sling Blade thing going on too. (sigh)

Never thought I would like this movie after reading about it. And I was 100% wrong. Clint Eastwood was great as the old crotchety man living who's kids basically desert him. His language and views were uncomfortable for me at first but then started to warm up to him and found him funny. The bar joke is brutally hilarious, and it explains his character. The way that he and his neighbor bond and both change (or grow up) is great to watch.

I can see a lot of people hating Gran Torino, or worse, loving it for the wrong reasons. Eastwood hasn't equaled Million Dollar Baby here -- and I don't know if he will again -- but what he has made is a disarming, stripped-down, and often funny portrait of one man from a fading generation. The longer I watched it, the more I realized how similar Eastwood is to that old '72 Gran Torino: some might say its time has passed, but it can still growl like no other, and you'll miss it when it's gone.

A very solid film from Clint Eastwood that explores themes of race and prejudice without the usual heavy-handedness that plagues many other films that approach the subject matter.

Workmanlike thriller, with some genuinely human moments. Eastwood is the scariest 78-year-old man you'll ever see.

Maybe it's not a great film, but I really enjoyed watching this thriller about a disgruntled war veteran trying to deal with the changing ethnicities in his neighbourhood. Clint Eastwood again admirably portrays a fascinating character, and though the supporting cast may not be stellar, I enjoyed them nevertheless. The film is at its best in its humorous parts.

One of the most painfully terrible films I have ever seen.

If this is to be Eastwood's last appearance in front of the camera it's a fitting end to an incredible acting career. He is outstanding as an old time racist loner carrying the weight of his traumatic experiences in the Korean War with him. Its full of excellently delivered dark humour and has a fantastic ending which personally I didn't see coming. My only complaint is the supporting cast were very average and that's being generous!
