Not as well constructed as And Everything is Going fine, but Spalding Gray is still an excellent orator, captivating and resonant.

This is my favourite piece by Spalding, and a compelling monologue from start to finish. Never a dull moment from this guy.

Really enjoyed this, as a total newcomer to Spalding Gray. He weaves a lot of stories into one larger narrative, with good pacing and excellent humor. His neurotic style appealed to me to, as I could connect on a personal level. While the film obviously lacks the punch of being in a live audience, it makes up for it with interviews to help break up the flow and creative use of lighting and editing. Overall though, Gray is the star - and his personality shines through every frame.

My first time experience Spalding after hearing so much about him and I have to say that I liked him a lot. I also like the way that Soderbergh chose to visualize Gray's narrative. The interviews in the beginning are a nice touch, but dropping them in the middle of Spalding's monologue is a little weak.

Not as good as Swimming to Cambodia or Monster in a Box; Soderbergh lays on the conceptual stuff a bit too thick, though I thought the interviews were a nifty idea.

First review: This one gave me headache. Quit after 30 minutes, which I very very rarely do. (Score 35) So I decided to give this another chance while I was recovering from my surgery with some sort of eye complications. I managed to finish it, enjoyed it slightly more. However, it still feels like you are being approached by some old people and forced to listen to their stories you have no interest in but keep listening out of courtesy.

It begins with a bunch of first-person accounts of hideous mishaps involving eyes. But hang in there--Gray is worth the wait. He is the master of the art-form he more or less created, the flamboyant confessional/monologue. It is such a tragedy that so many magnetic, reflective, intelligent, sensitive, brilliant artists like Gray end up committing suicide in the end (David Foster Wallace--with whom Spalding Gray has a certain spiritual kinship--I'm thinking of you, too).
