A fantastic cast and beautiful cinematography balance out the rushed pace and choppy editing - there's obviously a longer, better cut out there. Best appreciated by people already familiar with the story, as newbies could easily get lost.

Adds nothing that the millions of adaptations and dramatizations before it have, although a good starting place for newbies. It's boosted by three strong performances from Fiennes, Coltrane and Carter (who was born for the role) but it's still not enough to justify how unnecessary the films existence is.

Mind-numbingly bland and lumbered with surprisingly weak performances, this adaptation is safe to skip.

A watchable, not-too-heavy dramatisation of Great Expectations. The story follows pip, an orphan born into poverty in London. Two events shape his life - he helps free a prisoner and is asked to entertain a rich mad old woman. A mysterious benefactor funds him so that he can become a gentleman. The mysterious benefactor is the prisoner, Pip isn't too happy with this.

More like Shrimpy Expectations... this adaptation does not deserve a Pip Pip Hooray! It did have some pretty good acting from Helena Bonham Carter and Ralph Fiennes and Jeremy Irvine was a fine Pip. This film just didn't do anything new with the classic story...

My expectations for this movie were not met.

This cinematic adaptation, admittedly my first & only, of Great Expectations was good, though structurally flawed in its 3rd act (the novel shares some of the blame for this). Irvine makes a decent Pip, but it's Fiennes who steals every scene he's in as Magwitch. Newell's direction keeps the pacing quick and the film engaging, but the 3rd act revelations all seem to come at once, making it all feel very contrived. Dickens' satire on inherited wealth & gentility come across a little limp though.

Sloppily directed to be sure, but the cast and the material are strong enough to make it work.
