David Lean shows early on that he is the master of the long shot and the landscape. Even though most of the scenes here are interior (and beautifully shot interior at that) the exterior scenes stick out as especially incredible.

Pretty fantastic movie up until that really terrible ending. I could use a small case of amnesia to rid myself of that melodramatic crap. Cinematography is also very good despite the fact that Lean fired the guy who shot The Third Man. This movie also features one of the most unexpected/own deaths ever.

I haven't read the Dickens novel so I can't really judge this as an adaptation, but it's a superbly crafted film, and surely one of the best on crossing social stratifications. Lots of great performances and cinematography.

Although somewhat fascinating, I found Lean's grandiose melodrama quite uninteresting.

I care very little for the book or the movie, but that guy who says, "You know what vittles is?" was a hilarious moment that my buddy and I would say to each other over and over again in high school. We were quite cool.

Despite a melodramatic and far too optimistic conclusion, this is still the greatest of Dickens' adaptations. The use of landscape and the exploitation of Gothic elements in the story are both superb. A great supporting cast, with Finlay Currie, Martita Hunt, Francis Sullivan, and a very young Jean Simmons giving particularly memorable performances.
