One of those films I kept forgetting to review. It's no wonder, it's such a forgettable film because the satire is so damn prominent and obvious, which ruins both the humour and the incisiveness. The film actually gets worse as it approaches the end, becoming tonally inconsistent and actually pretty nasty. Of course, this all ends with closing intertitles listing off random stats about class disparity -- wow, thanks, film. Might've been some good jokes here and there.

The woman playing Steve Coogan's mother is the exact same age as him and looks even younger. It's got a great cast and an admirable message, but the script could have used another pass. There are funny moments but it's played too straight for how heavy-handed it is. Certain events in the climax stretch believability. The structure is bizarre, throwing chronology to the wind for no apparent reason. Has the feel of one of those Oscar-baitey true-story biopics, and that is not a compliment.

Greed is both a satire on the 1% and a stealth advocacy documentary (a slight step above propaganda) on budget clothes manufacturing in south Asia, with a bit on commentary on the refugee crisis to top it off. Winterbottom's (the man who made 9 Songs) heavy-handed treatment of the subject matter is disappointing. As are the offputtingly misleading and naïve stats in the credits. Luckily, great performances from Coogan, Mitchell and Gohil, as well as snappy pacing, make the film an enjoyable one

The film is well shot, well acted, and well researched. Overall, it's very entertaining and worth watching. Its hilarious quips and clever symbolism are equally matched, unfortunately, by its sporadic pedestrian and patronizing tone. As well as Winterbottom develops Coogan's character, the narrative lacks focus. It meanders between subjectivity and absolute objectivity. He gives humanity to his characters while simultaneously vilifying them to death, which simply does not make sense to me.

Slightly disjointed and underdeveloped in places - but still entertaining, and thought provoking.
