Bland and dull. Green Lantern's ring is only limited by the imagination of it's user. The universe would be screwed if the writers of this film wore the ring.

The definition of 'meh'- plays things far too safe, feeling like every other superhero origin movie ever made and its few good scenes are overshadowed by mostly bland and generic acting, dialogue and plotting. There's nothing that's really BAD or terrible about it (in fact it's still fairly watchable) but it really lacks a personality or true creative spark.

Let's list all the things wrong.. The music score is terrible for a blockbuster, uninteresting love interest, one of the "villains" sprouts into a penis head, Ryan Reynolds is a boring Ken Doll, the CGI effects look lame, and Tim Robbins has a bad hair piece. They should have concentrated on the intergalactic intrigue of the Green Lantern comic instead of dicking around for an hour plus with some silly nonsense plot on earth. They should also never let Campbell direct a superhero film again.

I've heard the word "boring" thrown around a lot to describe this movie, and I can't say that I see it. The movie definitely suffers from a weak script/plot, but Sarsgaard and Reynolds (who won me over even though I wasn't hot on him to start) really save the writers' sorry asses. The FX aren't as bad as you've heard, the acting isn't as bad, it's not boring (just paint by numbers in spots), the villain isn't lame, and Mark Strong is a badass. Decent superhero flick, no more and no less.

Disjointed. Reynolds is a fine actor but the script is all over the place and the Lantern suffers from the usual DC issue of making rediculously powerful heroes (Batman excluded) that sound like a 4 year old came up with them. For that to work you need a damned fine backing. That's missing here.

Not as bad as it's made out. It is fairly laughable on many levels, but I enjoyed it off and on. I know I've seen probably a dozen films ten times worse than this this year alone, and there is actually plenty of fun to be had here if you're in the mood for utter brainlessness. Decent at best, but some times that's enough. The ridiculous scene during the credits I saw coming a mile off, and I had so hoped we wouldn't have to sit through it as it makes no sense whatsoever, but no such luck...

"No one knows what this threat might be. It could be anything. Abin Sur thought he knew what it was. His final message said only: 'It's Parallax.'" Holy shit this movie was hilarious. I've never been so tempted to talk/riff in a theatre ("Good job Hal, we were just here watching the whole time."). It doesn't deserve the critical thrashing, but it's not very good either. Tough to imagine a space-heavy sequel when this Earthbound set-up was so incredibly costly. The credits stinger makes no sense.

Enjoyed it for the most part. Sure, they were a bit loose with the Green Lantern mythology, but the changes were the sort that I expect in a movie translation (rather than a total destruction of the source material ala Catwoman.) I liked Reynolds as Hal Jordan and Lively as Carol Ferris. The action sequences with the ring constructs were a lot of fun.

With a director like Martin Campbell at the helm, you'd think this one would be a knock out of the ballpark. It isn't. Instead, what we get is one strangely missed note after another, adding up to a movie that isn't bad so much as wrong.

Not too high on story depth, but still quite entertaining. I liked the various characters, but there is one major flaw: This movie contains too much little sidestories and too many characters and these are all stuffed in well under 2hours. Because of this everything is underdeveloped and absolutely unsatifying. 72 for the potential.

Why Martin Campbell would take on this project is beyond me. The Lantern story and figure is somewhat interesting, but doesn't show. Reynolds have serious problems with acting serious, even when a giant "cloud of fear" is approaching. Lively's acting skills is not worth mentioning, but her beauty on the other hand, makes this horrorshow, not a total waste. - Bad

Warner Brothers spent over 200 million dollars on this and couldn't even use a bit of that money to hire writers who know how to write a good story? Or maybe that's the problem, a too many cooks scenario. Direction is serviceable, acting varies. Constant use of CGI sucks out any spectacle, and it looks like they couldn't get it done in time, since it all looks slightly unreal. Not the worst, but its existence and poor box office returns make it apparent some exec has no idea what he's doing.

We need more actors like Reynolds cast in these superhero roles, and I have to admit the whole idea of magic rings based on an entire emotional colour spectrum that is said to be in the comics, and appears here partly, tickled my fancies. The film itself is a generic superhero origin story with barely a villain to defeat at the end and tedious moralising. Also as film critic Armond White has pointed out, Kilowog is racial stereotype that dumbfoundingly never raised any questions in production.

I don't think I've EVER felt this bored while watching a superhero movie. Even the action scenes in the movie were relatively dull, and the whole movie felt rushed in many areas before anything got interesting. I didn't expect to love this movie or anything, but it was significantly worse than I ever expected. This film houses everything that is wrong with superhero movies. The 7 screenwriters managed to smooth every rough edge so that the audience can see every plot turn coming 30 seconds in advance. The film is trying to be lighthearted and fun, because frankly it's for children, but also DEADLY SERIOUS, because that's in vogue at the moment. This translates into patchwork writing with no momentum.

Starts out with a queer math lesson, in which we learn that the universe is divided into 3600 quadrants. Furthermore, it is governed by two opposite forces: Will and, erhm, fear. If all that sounds rather underwhelming, it is in perfect thread with the rest of the movie, that focuses on the 'Top Gun' quadrant, as the dude from 'Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place' finds a ring that belongs in 'The Neverending Story' and battles an organic version of 'Unicron'. Hadn't I always been a sucker for comics, probably I'd rate this lower. Heavy on visuals, this is a big waste of potential. Also its "doer" versus "thinker" message is a very bad one: it says it is better to be a irresponsible, good-looking macho than a not-so-good-looking loser scientist with father issues. Because yes, you can always find a magic ring that'll plant all knowledge in your brain without even studying or trying to learn anything. And then, you'll also get the girl. Viva ignorami!

The central theme of will overcoming fear is ostensibly part of the Corps' concept; the primary flaw in film is therefore the script, which insults and wastes the time of the audience by reminding them of this central theme in practically every other line of dialogue. The script could have benefited by relying more on the strength of the characters and mythology; the respectable cast is ultimately wasted. It's a decent set-up, and if there're to be sequels, they're guaranteed to be much grander.

Unfortunately the plot's anchored by some of the most hackneyed characterizations 2 come down the pike since the Mummy movies & Reynold's umpteenth hot-shot personality disorder substitution 4 character should crash & burn almost everything that follows. That the film manages 2 pull out of such a tiresome nose dive is even more amazing than the impressive CGI.

A frustrating effort in that all the pieces seem to be here for a satisfying adventure, but nothing quite clicks into place; Reynolds is pleasingly laid-back and less frenetic than usual, Lively and Waititi are fun sidekicks, but Campbell seems to have lost all of his action direction chops, with action scenes disappointingly rote and by-the-numbers; to be fair, he is handed a fairly limp screenplay (though I liked the moment when Lively cuts through the "Lois Lane" conceit!) Watchable enough.

The extended cut (which is what my rating reflects) is a good superhero movie with fully developed characters, themes and motifs, brought a little low by its cliches and corniness. It has something to say, and it devotes its full runtime to saying it--and so few superhero movies clear that bar now. The cinema cut, well, cuts a lot of the connective tissue from the story, leaving it a rote husk, so I understand the initial rejection of it. But it deserves a rewatch.

If there is one thing that the film does in an unapologetic and horrendous way it is CGI. There is bad CGI and there is too much CGI. If there are two things that the film blatantly fails at, then the second one would be the non-existent screenplay possessing unrealistic and uninspired dialogue between characters played by actors with zero chemistry among themselves. There was literally one decent scene in the film (Hal is that you?) and the only redeeming quality is Blake Lively who is sexy.

Top badass moment? Hal's been a Green Lantern for all of about five minutes, when he stomps into the Guardian's hang-out and gives an impassioned speech about Earth and humans and stuff. If you get recruited by a Fortune 500 company, are you really going to barge into the boardroom on your first day and tell the directors, who have been there for basically forever, how to do things? That's got to be badass behaviour in anyone's book. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Nothing really seems to click through-out the film, whether it be the cheesy will they or won't they, or the dramatics that never really seemed that urgent. Green Lantern is just not authentic in anything, the dialogue is corny, the CGI looks beyond horrible and there never seems to be any real logical flow to the story line. There could have been a better story, one where we cared for Hal Jordan, but this one just never took the right twists and turns to get us there.

Ryan Reynolds was an interesting choice for the Green Lantern. I thought he did an ok job for sure but he really wasn't the main problem in this movie.
I thought the use of CGI for his suit was a really dumb choice and it looked really fake. Plus some of the aliens looked very bad with the unrealistic CGI used.
Now the action was great and of course Blake Lively was very nice to look at.
I think if they would have picked a stronger action star and a better CGI artist this movie would be great

I really enjoyed this movie. It wasn't the best movie I have ever seen, but it was very entertaining and better than some other Superhero movies. I absolutely loved Hal Jordan. There were parts that could have improved, but from the other superhero movies I have watched lately, this was surprisingly entertaining.

A disappointingly unfocused and meager take on a rich and promising concept. The story is torn between large-scale space opera and a smaller, more character driven superhero arc, and neither is given enough time to develop into something really gripping.
