Beautiful, beguiling, and far more Panos Cosmatos than I was expecting. A little too much narration but an unnerving experience nonetheless. I cannot believe this is getting a wide release! I wish it the best of luck.

I totally understand the criticism about the contents being rather spread out and leaning more on style than anything else, but despite all that I genuinely appreciated this. That general mood of... wrongness was enjoyable to me, plus I have a soft spot for unusual visual designs, like the recurring triangular shapes and that rad looking carriage. A slow burning gloomy fairytale that offered what I was looking for.

Oz Perkins cements himself as one of the best modern horror directors for fans who love real horror. This is surely his most accessible film yet, though pedestrian horror audiences will still likely be left wanting for more exposition, jump scares, and general plot. I hope it finds the right audience.

Like his previous efforts, Perkins takes an interesting idea for a short and stretches it to feature length not by expanding on the idea but by slathering it in spooky settings and moods to fill the time until he gets to the payoff. It's certainly not bad, the ending is good and Lillis continues to impress, but we end up with a few too many dead ends on the way there.

Good but frustrating. It's gorgeously made, has a great score and no shortage of atmosphere. But it never settles to become anything in particular. It doesn't have the specificity of time & place to be effective folk horror/fantasy (the dialogue for example is an awkward mix of The Witch style arcane dialect and modern speech patterns), nor enough ideas to succeed as something more deliberately surreal or vague. It's in a middle ground where it doesn't come close enough to being interesting.

An aesthetically beautiful film.

Expands upon the fairy tale, but also retreats from its own ideas by falling back on atmosphere. And it's gorgeous atmosphere, mind you, like a surreal glow of frosty, deadly dream archetypes. But after the standard-issue "come to the dark side" ending, we have to see that it's also not weird enough to be the sickening, pure mind-trip it so often promises.

A very ominous atmosphere, fitting for the fairy tale. Can't quite get over its inability to modernize it, but visually it's attractive.

Bordering treacherously close to pretentious, Hansel & Gretel coasts by on a haunted aesthetic, all atmosphere and nothing else.

It successfully butchered the original Hansel & Gretel and robbed it of its inherent suspense. Was the change worthy? No. Did it create a new thriller? Negative. It simply muddled everything in the guise of creating a modern version. I'm for change, no doubt, but only if it would generate an equally or a better story. My SCORING: 99-96=Great; 95-90=Very good; 89-85=Good; 84-80=So-so; 79-70=Boring; Below 70=Forget it.

What it lacks story wise it makes up with its visuals. But it's not like the stunning visuals are the only good thing about it. I truly liked it very much.

Undoubtedly and unarguably beautiful - a nearly 90-minute presentation of art, but it is so...boring. It's boring because it's not really about anything, really. The kids find the cottage in the woods. In the cottage is the witch, and then what? Personal journey's aside, nobody is trying to fix any kind of universal inequity. Biased Score: 48% | Unbiased Score: 66% | Criticker Prediction: 74%

Sophia Lillis adds another solid performance to her brief but strengthening resume, as Oz Perkins does his best Robert Eggers impression. The tone, direction, and camera work here all combine for a captivating reimagining of the Hansel and Gretel tale, and I really enjoyed Alice Krige's performance along with Lillis'. This certainly could have pushed more envelopes than it did, but the tremendous atmosphere I believe forgives the unsurprising cries of "boredom" from some in the audience.

It's only a hundred minutes long but the pacing is off. Much of the movie before the children find the witch's cottage could be cut. I wanted it to be be scarier, to lean into the horror angle more.

Grimm Kardeşlerin bilinen masalın çarpıcı versiyonu. Set tasarımı ve sanat yönetimine bayıldım. Kara görsellik de etkileyici. Zaten filmin konusu bilindik olduğundan, ortama gerilim katılmış. Masalsı gerilim. Filmin sonunda, cadının kolay ölmesi aşağıya çekiyor. Yine de kapıyı açık bırakmışlar. Kurtlar yakışıklı ve etkileyici ama çok cahiller.

Not as good as Perkins’ “The Blackcoats Daughter”, but a decent enough slow burn. His direction is solid, and I like the claustrophobic aspect ratio he chose. The score is a slightly odd choice, but unique from other recent horror films. The script is the main issue. Along with the odd dialogue, it doesn’t really do anything all that unexpected. The choice of a PG-13 rating is also baffling, as it could’ve gone a much darker route. Creepy atmosphere prior to the witch’s house though.

Sinuous, slow-burn telling of the fairytale is arguably a lot of style over substance, but so unsettling and genuinely creepy as a mood piece that narrative concerns take a back-seat, especially once Krige's strangely seductive old crone takes centre stage. Props also to Lillis imbuing her largely abstract and metaphoric character with a real presence and vitality (and giving Krige a run for her money in the process!) Haunting and memorable.

The atmosphere was great and the acting was fine but the direction and film itself were crap. Also, what was with the score, I mean this isn't Legend or Labyrinth. 45 minutes in and I noticed that I was checking the time every 5-6 minutes.
