Grosse Freiheit

Perfectly told and directed. One of those indie movies that may be hard to start watching and digesting but turns out to be one of the better ones of the past few years

There are few movies which can emtionally empower its audience through a subtle but long lasting feeling. This one makes the grade. Sound is perfectly in sync with the feeling of the film. I swear I heard the main character speaking loud and clear thanks to his body and gaze oriented acting. What's lingering is how incompatible is to experience and to live, to be curious and to feel.

Not a great prison film, but it's sustained by solid acting from everyone involved and it depicts such an unique love story -- one that starts with repulsion and ends with so much affection. 1945, 1957, 1968. Two love affairs end in a sour note in prison. The only enduring one is a friendship/romance with a convicted, self-destroying, drug addict murderer bound to last forever. Great last shot.

Yep, "great" is the word.

Strong film but also a bit repetitive at times. I know it's intentional to make a statement, but as a viewer it drags a bit too long.
