On April 26 1937 the small Basque town of Guernica was bombed without warning by the German aviation. Two thousand people, all civilians, got killed. Like millions all over the world, Pablo Picasso was shocked and he translated his emotion into a magnificent but terrifying picture bearing the name of the martyred city. This film does not only comment on the painting, it also gives it a new life through frantic camera and sound effects. (imdb)

A fucking drag. Granted, the source material isn't very cheery, but it hardly needs all this weighty and gloomy narration, nor an annoying avant-garde soundtrack, to point that out. Resnais' rapid editing and fragmentation of Picasso's work does nothing to enhance it... in fact, it's arguably disrespectful. Let the work speak for itself.

resnais is a genius really, commanding such electrifying, terrifying poetry. i couldn't care less about 'respecting' picasso or whatever.

Less a study on the painting of Guernica than an attempt to dramatize the events that inspired the painting and the changes that took place because of it. Interesting, but visually plays it pretty safe with lots of swipes and zooms in order to imply ACTION.

A talented filmmaker does a visual riff on Picasso's Guernica. Doesn't accomplish much more than the painting itself already does, to be honest.

I found the editing pretty interesting but it's not a particularly good movie.

Well, you know.. Eh. Some of the images are fine, but it's quite dull really. Alright.

This one had more ambiance than the previous works I've seen from Alain Resnais. Still uses the simplistic images of art to tell its story, but this time it felt more like a passion work with something more important to tell.

Disappointing. Except for one tracking shot towards the end, it doesn't add much to Picasso's paintings. I wasn't convinced by Éluard's text either.
