Intimate character-work by a strong cast, particularly a soulful Esai Morales, and shot mostly with a drifting handheld camera, this family drama focuses, like La mission, on what happens when an ex-con comes home to find his son has strayed from the masculine norm. In La mission, the son was gay. In GHR, the son is transgender & played pitch-perfect by Harmony Santana. Director Green excels in showing how she deals with negotiating sex & the emotional costs of transitioning. Inspiring stuff.
