Jonas Mekas wrote, produced, directed, and photographed this arty experimental study of the beatnik movement in America. A bleak portrait of modern existentialism and despair, Guns of the Trees tells the story of young Barbara (Francis Stillman), who is desperately trying to find some value in her life but is weighed down by depression. My first Mekas film. The longer I watched this, the more I liked it, I just needed to sync with Mekas' rhythm. A visual-auditory Beatnik poem; mourning the past and what is to come. A portrayal of life at the time from the perspective of Greenwich Village. The influence of this film on the development of American cinema is clear (Mekas himself is drawing on Cassavetes' 'Shadows', Carruthers appears in both) as is its role in shaping Beatnik culture (in particular of the moving-image form).
