At first, Habermann appears like a strangely benign and largely anonymous interpretation of this crucial moment in history geared towards mass appeal. The short running time also results in the dramatic compression of events over an 8 year time period, which reduces emotional involvement. However, in the 3rd act Herz's real intentions are laid bare: to critique his countrymen and their deplorable behaviour towards their own at the end of WW2. The acting is solid and there are few strong scenes.
