If you can watch this and not find it touching you have no soul. Bit long, maybe, but it's worth sitting through all the buildup to experience the end. I'm not even a dog person, and I'm fairly certain that had I seen this at the cinema I would have wept.

Amazing family movie. A very high score for this drama dog-movie on every movie-website, a true Japanese story of the '20. R.Gere played brilliantly. Very emotionally and intens story.

I want to see the version where it's entirely black and white POV from the dog, and Richard Gere is just making senseless warbling sounds.

It's a sentimental remake of the original Hachiko story from Japan. Not a bad remake to be honest as it captures the spirit of the original story and Hachiko is a pretty universal story for dog lovers around the world. Richard Gere is completely believable and likable in his role as the professor. It's still a remake though and not anything terribly special although it is very heartwarming. The rest of the cast turns in decent performances as well.

Super sentimental pet movie, but there is something really endearing about the idea of blind loyalty. It's sad and sweet and I knew it complete, when I wore a younger mans clothes.

Sometimes it’s not bad to be reminded of how susceptible we can become to the affective power that it is possible to generate merely by projecting sound and light, and that it has very little if anything to do with our capacity for cognition or reflection.

I used to hold in high regard the views of Criticker user djross, however if he can only muster a score of 45 for this beautiful relationship between a man and his dog then he must have significant problems. Shame! I still like him a lot though.

Aww, cute dog, isn't it so sad how he mourns some guy's death? That's the extent of this movie's depth. If that's what you're interested in go ahead and watch it, clearly a lot of people like it. Not me, though. It's endlessly sappy with one of the most overbearing and tedious scores I've heard in a long time, relying heavily on cheap sentimentality. The acting is mediocre, the central relationship with Gere and the dog is underdeveloped and the bookends are terrible. How is blind loyalty heroic?

Surprised that this got the straight-to-DVD treatment in the US, but it would've likely done just fine as a shorter film (see: Futurama's Jurrasic Bark episode).

Absolutely loved it! Thought Richard Gere to be just great in this one, but I wouldn't want to forget mentioning all the other performances. I was absolutely grabbed by the sweetness of this story. Me as a dogs lover myself recognised a lot of this film in myself.

Featuring Richard Gere and Joan Allen, this is a simple but involving adaptation of a true story. It's a tender tale that offers lessons of friendship, commitment and love. And it's a family film that actually says positive things about marriage and family--while keeping things tail-waggingly clean. (pluggedin.com)

This well-acted and well-photographed film has a big heart which - when it breaks - will break your heart as well. It is a sentimental film, sure, but in contrast to the despicable *Marley and Me*, *Hachi* earns its tears. I am a cat-person, not a dog lover, but I really liked this film. It is for all people who have loved an animal and been loved in return.

A warm family drama based on a true story about an unbelievable loyalty. Gere brings an affectionate and warm performance and creates a convincingly bond with the Akita-dog Hachi. Charming and funny to begin with although maybe a little to clichéd and sweet but it's very rewarding in the end where we get a few very emotional scenes.

Look at any poster for this movie, you know its job is to make you cry. It'll do that, but it's just kind of borderline manipulative in doing so.

(not so) manly tears were shed for this film that has one purpose and one purpose only: making you cry. I tried so hard fighting them, furiously overanalyzing the tricks the director used (e.g. antropomorphizing the dog), but the director just keeps pounding you and pounding you until you give in. The movie is complete shit, but I have to give it this score because anything lower would be denying the defeat I suffered at the hands of the director. Well played Hallstrom, well played.

Piggy-backs emotion totally off of the 'real story'. The 'true' story is a love letter addressed to my very core self, so it'd take something special for me to dislike anything based upon it. Loved making comparisons between the dog and the wife. Didn't see the Mrs waiting around long in the snow and rain! Too long, lots of pointless stuff in it.

Family-friendly, sentimental tearjerker (a remake of a 1987 Japanese film) based on real events that occurred in Japan in the 1920s although the plot is much like 1961's "Greyfriars Bobby."

Let's not mince words. I hate this fucking movie. It's not that it's poorly made ... although it kind of is, but that's not my real issue. My issue is that in order to maximize the emotional manipulation in the climax of the movie, the details of the story (it's based on true story that happened in Japan) are altered to maximize the callousness and stupidity of the humans in the movie, and change a story of animal loyalty into a story about animal abuse.

A wonderful canine story that will definitely give similar movies a run for their money. Great acting from Gere but I was hoping for a greater interaction with the supporting characters and a little more depth to the story as well. All in all my verdict would be that its an average movie.

Based on true story. It's a bit cheesy and I'm annoyed by the fact that the only Japanese element is Professor's friend, but it's still a solid family movie. Good performance from Akita

The first hour is basically just Gere showing off his new dog, and it's as airless and aimless as that sounds. But boy, does it come around. I understand all you dog people loving this movie, even if it's more an anecdote than a story.

A film that thinks itself heartwarming, but is really just depressing. The dog is a "hero" because he experienced PTSD after the death of his master and ceased to function as a social being? And no serious effort was made to get him out of his rut. That's nearly as bad as the girl who said her hero was Columbus.

Gere as great and wooden as in his 'Shall We Dance?"! train station people so painful to watch. dog-vision thing as fake as it could be (who knows). at least, the dog was cute. love of your pet should not cloud the obvious fact that this is a sub-par melodrama at most.

Loosely based on true events. A story about a dog devoted to his owner. After the owners passes away he continues to wait for him until his death. This adaptation is a successful tearjerker. However, the build up to the story is weak, with creative license that did little to add value. I would have preferred a more accurate telling and more details about how their bond became so strong. Amusing at times and emotional, but not particularly good.

It’s a touching film that’s mis-cast completely. Richard Gere is out of his element here. Really, though, there is a lack of plot development. I feel like the director failed massively and instead of loyalty portrayed family neglect a lot. This movie can be summarized in five sentences: Joan Allen hates dogs. Richard Gere is bored, finds a pet project. Richard Gere is professor of the musical arts. Dog waits at train station for Gere daily, commuters admiring. Daughter fails to connect w dog.

This elicited a lot of emotions in me, primarily anger that my time was thus wasted. I hated the lumpy performances. I hated the omnipresent, manipulative piano score. I hated the telegraphing of every unremarkable plot point. I hated the inconsistently desaturated dog POV shots. After watching this I retroactively hated every Lasse Hallström movie he's ever made, including the ones I originally sort of liked. The dog was fine. 20 points for the dog.
