Hal Ashby's obsessive genius led to an unprecedented string of Oscar-winning classics, including Harold and Maude, Shampoo and Being There. But as contemporaries Coppola, Scorsese and Spielberg rose to blockbuster stardom in the 1980s, Ashby's uncompromising nature played out as a cautionary tale of art versus commerce. (imdb)

Nothing but hagiography, really, with not much discussed about his troubled upbringing and how it relates to his films. It's nonetheless a glorious recap of one of New Hollywood's most relevant counterculture figures. I was particularly pleased to see a decent amount of time spent on his editing work and his lesser known '80s films.

Frustratingly short of any substantive comments or insight, but this charming collection of talking heads proves difficult to resist, especially in service to lionising Ashby, who finally gets a full moment in the sun after being overlooked in favour of more popular 70s film-makers. Affectionately crafted and does utilise well chosen clips to at least remind the viewers of why Ashby was such a singular force in his time.
