Hamaca paraguaya

Set in 1935, an old couple are waiting for their son to return from the war. He is fighting for Paraguay; the warring nations are Bolivia and Paraguay. The Paraguayan won the war, but their son did not return alive. The old couple had nothing to celebrate and nothing to live for.

Stylistically a strange film, full of dialogue yet you never actually see anyone talking, creating a distancing effect enhanced by the long lingering shots. I found it a bit tough to keep my interest, and the film doesn't do much to contextualize the war they're talking about, but there are a lot of interesting things to think about and the style grew on me.

This is one of the saddest films I've seen lately.
