Par for Hollywood's Vietnam canon, a straightforward and grisly march to a pyrrhic...uh, let's call it a draw. The Philip Glass score is quite the mismatch, love his music but the guy won't bend his style an inch to serve a movie.

War is hell, and this is a good example of that. But it don't mean nothin. The main message of this film, outside of the whole pointlessness of the situation, is how shitty everyone was to the grunts stuck in the dirt. You can hate a war, you can hate the people in charge, but don't take it out on the poor bastards being sent to an impossible situation. There's also a few moments of fantastic acting on show here. But it does have its flaws, mainly in the first 45 minutes.

I'm not sure where this movie's heart is at, but I don't think I like it. Reprimanding war correspondents for taking pictures? eh, standard war fare.

It was pretty funny seeing Borscht Belt Jewish comic actor Steven Weber (of Wings fame) playing a sergeant from the South. Lots of awkward dialogue too. May have been the movie that jump-started Don Cheadle and Dylan McDermott's careers. And remember: Ain't nothing. Not a thing.

One of my personal fave Vietnam movies. The hill is a human meat grinder.

It doesn't break the new ground that Platoon did, but this is still near the top of the list of Vietnam films.

"very realistic" is code for boring parts.

The aspect of soldierly brotherhood is pushed hard in the film, maybe too hard. "Still Hamburger Hill" is a stark reminder of the true cost of war.

Not one of the better Vietnam War films, but its a good illustration of the confusion, pointlessness and general shittiness of the situation.

In what seems like an attempt to highlight the futility of their actions, the film never provides a sense of what the men's goals are or what tactics they are executing. So rather than get some sense of them trying to achieve something and failing (other than just get to the top the hill), we get waves of men seemingly marching straight into their deaths. That can work marvelously in some films, but this isn't that kind of film.

Score would be at least 10 points higher if the lead was someone better than Dylan McDermott. Beyond that, lop off the whole first half setting up the characters and just make the whole film about the assault on the hill. Characterization could have been done in the lulls between the charges.

This movie should definitely be included with some of the great Viet Nam war movies of that era, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket and Born on the Fourth of July. Great performances by this ensemble cast.
