Zefferelli does yet another Shakespeare, with less success than he had with Taming of the Shrew or Romeo and Juliet. Hamlet returns to Denmark when his father, the King, dies. His mother Gertrude has already married Hamlet's uncle Claudius, the new King... (imdb)

Intermittently enjoyable run-through would always have been inherently compelling with this cast and director; unfortunately it makes a somewhat bland and uninteresting film, with its sets and setting aping Olivier, and unfortunate truncations of some of the text causing a rushed and hectic feeling (Carter's Ophelia barely gets a look-in). Most surprising is Gibson's distinctive, unaffected, and very successful interpretation of the role; he alone makes the film a worthy addition to the canon.

Not too off to be dismissed as crap, but entirely ignorable seeing how far superior the Kenneth Branagh version is on every single level.

One can blame Mel Gibson for his Lethal Weapon-like perfrormance of Hamlet in this movie, but that was what he was chosen for. In my humble opinion, he does a good job when you want to show how Hamlet turns mad. Bonham-Carter gives an awesome Ophelia, too. Additionally, I like the interpretation of the murderous conspiracy of Hamlet's mother and his uncle.

Zeffirelli has great visual style, but Mel Gibson and Glenn Close are both pretty bad in this.

Sort of Hamlet light? It's Shakespeare in the sense of the story, but everything feels weird. Still there is a lot of charm in this cast so it isn't unwatchable.

I wasnt expecting much from Gibson, but I thought he did a solid job with the character. Hamlet is one of my favorite plays by The Bard, and overall, I thought Zefferelli had a good read on it. Though, I should really watch this again before making such a statement. As a sidenote, this film began my love for Helena Bonham Carter, and there is not a film I will not watch, just to see her

Subtle it ain't; between the stripped-down plot, the action-movie directing and Gibson playing the Dane much like he plays every other role, it falls just this side of Schwarzenegger's all-too-brief version. That said, it gets the job done; Gibson is tolerable, Close, Holm and Carter overact just enough to match him without losing track of the play, and in terms of straight-forward-no-sissy-philosophy Hamlets, this is probably as good as it gets.

Mel Gibson presents: Braveheart as Hamlet, getting entirely too ragingly close to Glenn Close as Oedipal Gertrude!

Very good version of Shakespeare's tale of revenge.

Fra Imdb: Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, finds out that his uncle Claudius killed his father to obtain the throne, and plans revenge. I overkant sær dialogføring for min smak, men alikvel en fint fortalt historie. Tar seg veldig opp mot slutten, og redder helhetsinntrykket. Ennio Morricone skuffer stort, kanskje første gang den mannen ikke har imponert meg.

A while back as I was watching Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet, I found myself being what I considered to be very forgiving, simply because of the unsurpassed source material. I figured that my fascination with Shakespeare would trump all sorts of various flaws, as long as it stayed true to the original. Despite fitting the aforementioned criteria, I thought this was really weak for reasons I can't find words for.

A gorgeous adaption.

My high school English teacher said that this was her preferred film version of the play because it preserved the Medieval setting which was integral in understanding this material. It's actually the most naturalistic of the four best known film versions and you might feel that this significantly limits the play's potential. You may also rue the lighter touch of Zeffirelli's Shakespeare adaptations from the 60s. Aside from the top-billed Gibson and Close, it's not a terribly memorable film.

Straightforward and boiled-down version of the play.

The film is less interested in the text and more interested in the action around the text. This leads to some excess (R&G losing their heads) that takes away from the words themselves. I'm not fond of Gibson's actorly ways here, but Bonham Carter and Holm are both quite good. The film plays pleasantly enough, but it isn't a favorite by any stretch.

I love Shakespeare and I love Hamlet, but this version is BAD all across the board. Bad cut, bad direction, bad aesthetic, and many lukewarm performances.

Hamlet as an action hero! ... Or as close as he'll ever get. Mad Mel is immensely intense and present in the lead part, but most of this nonetheless feels a bit off as a whole - and indeed inferior in comparison with Branagh's epic version.

Really enjoyed this movie. The cast did a great job. And Ennio Morricone nailed the score. It's a moody movie and I like that mood.

Ian Holm and Helena Bonham Carter are a lot of fun in this, but, as has been noted, the obvious shortcomings of its lead, and the existence of the Branagh movie render this one pretty obsolete. It's fine, but Hamlet has been done far better.

All the leads, including Gibson and Close, are completely miscast, but the interpersonal dynamic between all these miscast leads makes this an accidental camp classic.

Good adaptation of the play. It didn't feel dragged out or rushed despite the rearranging of scenes and dialogue. I thought those changes were handled well for the most part though.
