The great Barbara Sukowa stars in Margarethe von Trotta's fascinating biography of the influential philosopher and political theorist, whose reporting on the 1961 trial of ex-Nazi Adolf Eichmann led to her famous concept of the "banality of evil." (tiff.net)

Very 'light' film, for such a powerful mind

Great subject, but spotty execution. The personal drama never digs deep enough to warrant greater interest. Many of the supporting performances are shrill and horrible (the heads of her university are more parody than anything). The smoking scenes are redundant and are lingered on too much. In Good Night, and Good Luck it was just part of the overall atmosphere. Here, it's awkward. I kept thinking I'd rather be watching a documentary about Arendt instead.

A rote, by-the-numbers biopic that gets by thanks to its fascinating subject. It's never boring, but by the end I just wanted to go and read about Hannah Arendt rather than think about what I had just seen.

Barbara Sukowa is excellent but all in all it's kind of flat. The philosophy carries it, which makes me want to seek out Arendt's writing. The problem is that Arendt's life wasn't very cinematic. As far as adapting a book of philosophy goes, it does a decent job, but you might as well just read Eichmann in Jerusalem.

All the points I give are for Arendts fascinating views and her terrible accent, that is so brutal that it becomes funny again. But the film itself, the acting, the camerawork, the directing, the script: Yuck! Welcome to german television!

I know I'm rating the philosophy more than the film.

In a way, it does represent extremely well the luxuries and the lust one might possess for having academic life.

Interesting subject matter, subpar delivery. Dialogue was cheesy, lighting was distracting, acting was over the top. Made me want to learn more because of how spotty this coverage was.

32. İstanbul Film Festivali - City's: Kötü değil ama fazlasıyla düz bir film. Aslında mühim konular içeriyor ama herşeyi karakterler tartışıp tükettiği için bize ekrana bakıp izlemek kalıyor.

Clearly, I need to add Arendt to my reading list. The filmmakers have a difficult task here: dramatize an intellectual breakthrough. The abstraction of the goal means there are lots of shots of Sukowa sitting and thinking, lying down and thinking, arguing with others, and typing. The real strength of the film is in Sukowa's physical performance--there's a solidity to the way she moves and carries herself that communicates the kind of tough-mindedness she would have needed to write what she did.

By-the-numbers TV-looking biopic that simplifies but still raises some interesting questions. I'm still not sure what side the movie wants us to come down on, which may or may not be the point. Sukowa is excellent, though.
