Aside from the witches being far too camp, this is a pretty fun time. It knows how dumb it is, it knows when to poke fun at itself, and Renner's deadpan acting is (perhaps unintentionally) very funny at times. Wirkola seems to understand when it's OK to do something for the sake of the thing alone - i.e. Hansel's diabetes, which was actually very pleasing to me. Several clever touches, overall not really anything to get excited about but it exceeded my very low expectations. Skip the 3D.

Not that I was looking for immersion from a movie about a leather-clad brother-sister duo who, between the tip-toeing around their incestuous chemistry, kill witches with steam-punk crossbows, but fuck all movies set in medieval Europe that feature modern dialogue/jokes delivered by porn-grade American actors in their Venice beach accents. The queen is not amused.

If you want a lot of blood and a touch of sex, HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS fits the bill pretty well. It's not very good, to be honest: the plot is kind of murky, there are no memorable lines, and the cast seem to be slumming it--but it has plenty of action, it looks pretty nice, and it provides enough gory fun to make it worth your while. Tommy Wirkola's direction is no slouch, while Famke Janssen and Peter Stormare are always good for some hammy villainy. If this is your bag, have at it.

It's almost too quick to hate (88 minutes of hurried, shallow plot points), but the writers really do a disservice to Gretel in turning her into the damsel in distress. I thought Renner was gonna play the bumpkin in need of saving (sad face). The egregious violence against women sucks, too—even if they're literally witches.

I AM EDOUAARRD.

I feel like this script was written with the intention of being a piss-take on the recent spate of "grim and gritty" fairy tale movies, but whatever satirical teeth it may have had have long since been pulled before it hit the screen. There are still some seemingly comedic concepts at play here, like Hansel's childhood-candy-induced diabetes, but they're played totally straight and wooden, like the filmmakers don't realize how stupid this all is. It makes for a dull, leaden movie. Just terrible.

It's messy and stupid but in terms of brainless entertainment it just about works. Some inspired fights are let down by sloppy directing/editing, and the plot is nothing to write home about. It's biggest failing is that despite clearly not taking itself seriously it doesn't go far enough to become a complete comedy. If they'd just pushed it a bit more into campy comedy territory it would have worked a lot better.

As far as movies like this one, I don't care about the plot, just acting that needs to be decente. To me, this is like Machete, but with the benefit - and oh, what a benefit it is - of enchantantly beautiful women. My only gripe with it is that Pihla Vittala's character died, and that no vampire was harmed. Oh, boy. I would have loved to see that troll smash a vampire's head! And now I'm trying to fall out of love with Gemma.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters has interesting ideas that go to waste, a central premise that exists as a joke, a tone that's far too serious -- even with all the over-the-top action going on around it -- and an odd lack of jokes and irony that would have at least elevated it above "terrible." Unless the idea of Hansel and Gretel becoming witch hunters is so funny that you're literally rolling on the floor laughing at the thought of it, skip this movie.

I actually had to look this up, but this thing made OVER 200 MILLION DOLLARS!!! How? I'm not sure. Apparently this has gotten a cult following and I still can't figure out why. First off, some of it is fun, so it's not completely terrible. But the weak story and borderline atrocious special effects really hamper this movie. I saw Rush this year and it had; less of a budget, better acting, better story, better cinematography and just more fun. AND THAT MADE OVER A 100 MILLION LESS THAN THIS?!!!

Too high concept to allow for much characterization & so this needs to deliver in other ways. Its biggest strength is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. There's amusing bits w/ missing kids on milk bottles & a diabetic Hansel. There's also some good creature design (a witch & unexpectedly kind troll), & surprising violence & cursing. The action scenes are a little too fast/unclear & the steampunk gadgets become TOO silly (a defibrillator?!) for my tastes, but Arterton's easy on the eyes.

It was a nothing movie. It didn't offend me in anyway but it definitely wasn't very good. Best part about it was that it didn't take itself seriously at all, and there was some humour to it all. The gore I think actually helped this a little in that regard with how over the top it was. Performances aren't anything to right how about either and felt like they all kinda phoned it in.

A passable diversion, but not really distinctive or creative enough to stand out from the multitude of post-BUFFY vampire/zombie/witch battles of yore, and does very little with its H&G conceit, aside from a fairly long-winded set-up. Renner and Arterton make for a fun team, and the action scenes are pulled off with a competent energy and fluidity, if again never really taking any opportunity to stand out, Nothing egregious, but nothing memorable.

I don't care how dumb it was, it knew exactly what it was doing and it was embracing it. Different ideas, almost impossible to guess too far ahead where things are going, some fun action and nasty elements too. No sugar coating; Hansel and Gretel are pottymouth rednecks who love money and killing and have terrible social skills beside their good sibling kinship, and that is a fun change from too perfect characters or movies where the main characters end up dating

Cinematic masterpiece this is not. It's pretty simple and predictable and the dark edge feels calculated. It makes no pretense about it, though, and within its limits works very well. The story is coherent and entertaining, the acting is decent and there's some good line delivery here and there. Not really special but it delivers what it sets out to do.

I'll admit it, this movie was fun. I really enjoyed the weapons, the style of the fighting, the magic used by the witches and just generally how not serious this movie took itself. Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton were an excellent witch killing duo in this super bloody children's tale. This is also the only movie that will get me to say that I'm "Team Edward". The action was good, and the lines were sappy and funny. They also had a good use of cursing, and I don't mean hexes.

I don't even begrudge the concept, but the dialog was shitty, the plot was shitty, the CGI was shitty, and the mixing of time periods was absolutely shitty (Insulin shots, EKG machines, Gatling guns, and modern-day profanity? Give me a fucking break). I think they wanted this to be in the vein of Evil Dead and various other horror-comedies, and some people may still find camp value in this. But it's played so straight, and tries so desperately to be cool, that it ends up being awful.

This seemed like a silly R rated cross between "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" & "Supernatural". The whole thing is really stupid, shallow and seems way too contemporary. Gemma Arterton is really terrible as the main lead, while Jeremy Renner & Famke Janssen are barely adequate and really ham it up. It does have some decent gore and Edward was the highlight of the film, his fight with the sheriff and his men being the best part of the whole movie.

I loved the move, it wasn't perfect, but it was entertaining. I wasn't going into it thinking it was going to be super serious. I was hoping for an entertaining and fun (to my taste, love the tidbits of gore) movie, which it was. I see many felt the movie was corny and predictable, can't argue really, but that was a good thing to me. A movie like this should be a little corny and silly at times, Captain America was ruined for me because it seemed too serious. This was fun, and a good watch.

If you don't take this film too seriously, and I'm pretty sure the film has no intention of you taking it seriously, then it is alright. I liked the gore and the profanity, even though both come off as forced. The writing is not good though and some things are just way too predictable. I think there was more potential, if they simply made the plot a little more surprising. Watch it for some kick-ass witch-killing, don't watch it for well pretty much anything else...

It tries so hard to be the rude, rough, dirty and sexy fairy tale film in a time of cute fairy tales, that it ultimately fails big time. Its splatter sequences seem nice, but also as repetitive and as every forced line filled with shit or fuck. What really stands out are numerous steady shots despite this is an action movie. In general, it's ok. The lightning creates an atmosphere, the story is interesting, but it also has drawbacks. The blonde gal and the final scenes are plain and typical for its genre. Also, the suggestion that Gretel drinks water with her brother's sperm in it seems kinda disgusting. Anyway, it's still better than the original tale and therefore worth seeing, even if it's just for a simple comparison.

Top badass moment? Possibly the most violent kids' film every made. Two pesky children piss off a little old lady by tying to eat her house; then burn her to death. Young people; (shakes head). It's vacuous, but as a bizarre, 80’s style action movie set in the Middle Ages, with miniguns and automatic crossbows, it’s strangely effective. It also looks great. No cats or chainsaws. There are some decapitations, but this film reopens the debate regarding how tightly we define what this means.

Yet another example where Hollywood under does the writing and over does the action/effects. I liked the story, and elaboration on the origin of Hansel and Gretel was nice, but they made it so flashy, it took away from the movie for me. I did like the use of practical effects/animatronics combined with CGI when appropriate. Costume design and weapons design could have used a lot of work; all the guns looked like tree stumps. Would recommend to fairytale lovers, not so much to anyone else.

This is a weird-ass movie. It would've been better served by sticking with the goofy tone it takes early on, but gets a little too bogged down in backstory, exposition and drama towards the back end. Still, it's not a slog, and it's only like 85 minutes so it doesn't overstay its welcome either. Could've been a lot worse, though the fact that this is going to be a franchise is a bit bizarre. Gemma Arterton is hot.

Boring and quite silly movie. The only good thing on it is Gemma Arterton, a great actress that I can't belive is involved in projects like this. She does her best but the script doesn't help, and sadly even being one of the two main characters she isn't on screen that much. The rest quite horrible, specially the Famke Janssen character that doesn't even have a single decent line: her character should be mute.

I know there are no characters to speak of, & there's plenty of cheese to spread around, but I thought the witches were badass, the fight scenes were tense, particularly since the heroes get their asses kicked, the costumes were inventive, reminding me of Barker's Nightbreed, the one liners hammy & barbed, the pace was quick & there's comical gore.
