What happens when you give Tommy Wiseau both the superpowers of Magneto and the haircut of Karl in Die Hard? You have the supervillain in this 100% first-person parkour spectacular that made me want to buy a secondhand GoPro and start my own extreme bridge-climbing YouTube channel. Something tells me half the budget was used bribing Russian official to let the filmmakers do whatever the fuck they wanted in literally every other scene. Mission accomplished.

I'm going to give this a lot of extra points for effort. It's impressively done, pretty seamless and convincing. The story really doesn't work but what do you expect. It has some memorable sequences. That said, it was extremely tiring to watch and I didn't really enjoy it too much overall; Could have maybe been fantastic with a better plot and something to balance out the endless action. Danila Kozlovsky does a fair impersonation of Tommy Wiseau playing a villain.

Dumb FPS: The Movie, nothing more and nothing less. And while it is an empty, silly and childish piece of nonsense, it's at the same time really good at what it sets out to do. Which is making you go "JA JONGEH??" (or your own non-Dutch equivalent) and cackling madly as some crazy violent bullshit thing happens. Best watched in non-sober company.

'Hardcore Henry' is structured like a modern AAA shooter: the protagonist follows a line from point A to B, procuring a new MacGuffin and shooting through a wave of faceless mooks in a new environment right before a brief cutscene of exposition. Rinse and repeat. Some of these sequences (or levels) are exciting, some of them aren't, and it culminates with an anticlimactic boss battle at the end. It gets points for ambition, but loses some for inducing nausea.

Obviously video games and movies like Crank are the big reference points here, and that's true: HH is a bare-bones FPS with a thin story and little reason to care about the characters, yet, the action is mostly inventive with the gimmick working well most of the time. Occasionally it's really disorienting and stifles the flames of violence, and it feels a little long, but up until it becomes a bit of a drag around the third act, it's a hell of a lot of fun. Doesn't reach 'great' status though.

A cold opening quickly became what I found to be quite an entertaining movie. Critics were split on this and I can see why. Has it's flaws, but nearly every action does. Nonetheless, Hardcore Henry uses the best of it's title and throws out a lot of decent thrills and bloody violence. Story is pretty nonexistent but that may have been the intention. I liked the 96 minute romp regardless. Worth watching if you want to have yourself a good, good time.

A cyborg super soldier tries to rescue his wife from some kind of telekinetic Russian overlord. More of an experimental tech demo than an actual film, it's a bloody, non-stop 90 minute first person action sequence. While it's technically impressive, the novelty wears off quickly and it becomes exhausting to watch. The constant shaking jerky camera movements and pounding music gave me a ruthless headache. Probably the best thing about this was seeing Sharlto Copley dying dozens of times.

It's more than just the POV gimmick. It has good humour and style and WAY over the top violence. It still would have been decent if shot regularly, and the POV actually adds to it.

It's true that the advent of cheap, small, high-res cameras (à la GoPros) have made first person films less impressive. What sets this apart is the decent humour, Copley's entertaining portrayal of different characters, and the awesome-cool!™ stuntwork and violence.

It is what it claimed to be, an over the top point of view actioner. The scenes all flow together at a frenetic pace with a few little pauses. The action is great and Copley is a great fit for the role. Some of the humour is sick and twisted which had me belly laughing (throwing a stripper in a fight). The only drawback is the POV gets to be a bit too much.

Old concept but different media, this movie brings the world of FPS from videogames to the cinema even with explicit references to some. But while this concept is interesting, it also lacks substance because everything in the film: characters, sound, music, plot, even the acting is made in compliancy of the shot. This is a huge issue for people that wants something to bring with them, there is nothing other than pure and straight fun in this movie, you watch it you say "cool" and that's it.

HARDCORE HENRY is a noble experiment in action schlock, displaying dizzying levels of commitment to its unique GoPro photography and some bullshit about cyborg super-soldiers. It struggles to sustain its harried energy for longer than a brief action sequence, but frequent pop-ins from a white-haired telekinetic villain and a shape-shifting Sharlto Copley help keep the madcap momentum going. Praise be to lax Russian film safety laws.

Accomplishes the not so easy task of being both incredibly fun and incredibly stupid at the same time. So while the movie will most likely gain a following among scruffy-haired pubescent boys who have just discovered the opposite sex, it's all done in good fun, with a surprising amount of panache and deceptive simplicity that belies its inventive and technical complexity. Rock on!

Hardcore Henry is essentially a live-action video game. The first person point of view is gimmicky, but the plot works with it, to mixed results. The plot embraces sci-fi and action tropes delivering an energetic ride with elements that feel familiar. Copley brings some much needed levity and Kozlovsky makes a great campy villain. The action itself is mediocre and there are plot holes galore, but there are fun moments to be had, provided you can handle the ridiculous, senseless death toll.

It would be easy for me to just compare this to a video game, so that's what my lazy ass is going to do. It's shot in first person, the opening scene feels like the getting to know the controls level, there is humor that mostly doesn't work, the action takes only brief respites for story, there is an escort mission, and it basically appeals mostly to teenage boys. It sounds like I'm shitting on it, and I kinda am. It's OK and has some cool moments but I hope 1st POV doesn't become a thing.

What an uncompromisingly masculine, adrenaline-pumping ride! This movie is a madman frothing at the mouth with talent. And this madman actually wears some solid SF vestiges of a plot. Shame the actual proportions of rabid violence vs clever plot weren't more on the plot's side, but I still buy it. Also two things. First, barring this flick and a few others, Sharlto Copley is such a criminally underused genius. Second people who like John fucking Wick are nothing but clueless pussies.

If you film a movie that relies on a gimmick, you'd better be sure you do it well. "Hardcore Henry" blows it out of the water, it's the first time that a first-person shot movie expertly integrates the style with film-making. You're still walking into a action movie, one with a pretty video game-y story, so if that's not you're thing, take a pass. But this one was balls-to-the-wall fun, and I hardly even need to mention that Sharto Copely was the best part of it.

If you worry about such pettiness as logic and purpose then Hardcore Henry, a video gamer's wet dream disguised as a movie, is not for you. There's no denying the visual wizardry of first-time feature director Ilya Naishuller. OK, his ultra-violent sci-fi extravaganza, shot on GoPro mobile cameras, doesn't add up to much. It's all about the ride, the relentless wallop and whoosh. But, hey, sometimes that's all a cine-junkie needs for a fix.

If first-person style shooting disorients you, this will be the WORST for it! I almost left 1/3 of the way through because they combined this with shots intended to inspire vertigo. But despite all of this, the movie was much ~smarter~ than I expected. By the end, I was applauding at the cleverness of it all. With action films today devolving into CGI video game cut scenes it's ironically refreshing to have a movie that's finally as fun as a video game can be. This is gritty knock 'em sock 'em action that sticks more to the down to earth stunt work than polygons ballet dancing. Fun. Funny. All it really needs to be. The finale is a bit of a let down, as Akan turns out to be not much of an "end boss," but then most final bosses are a let down. Plus any movie a theater gives a WARNING to is a must see.

Telekinetic Tommy Wiseau and his cyborg army are out to get you (Henry, that is), and it's kill or be killed. The cinematic equivalent of a rail shooter, and an admirable attempt at something different, but a little too frenetic to be enjoyable. It isn't bad as such; I'm just not sure that it works. I was expecting Hardcore Henry's First Person POV Gimmick to outstay its welcome, but it really made the whole experience insanely entertaining. The stunt work is cool and the movie really felt like you were playing a Video Game. Great music also fits well with the action. The story isn't the most amazing thing in the world, there's a lot of contrivances and the acting is a bit wonky. This feels like a first person shooter game, and not just in the obvious POV but also in the way the plot unfolds piece by piece. The POV action is well directed and very entertaining, which is a huge plus for this movie. But as a whole the movie falls flat, the gimmick makes it near impossible to connect with the protagonist. The unnecessary overcomplicated plot doesn't help with this either. Copley is clearly having a field day with the multiple characters he's allowed to improv.

While I can't deny there are some cool moments in the movie, as well as Sharlto Copley's fun in his role definitely being infectious, this movie is really bad. The writing is bad, the acting is worse, and the entire concept of it all —that this is a movie pretending to be a video game— ultimately becomes so exhausting that I couldn't care by the end, and it was not helped by going so over the top it fell off the ledge. Frequently compared to a video game, and it's not an unfair comparison, since this mimics them in many regards - such as the long boring intro before you can have fun, and then how it eventually gets too repetitive to be interesting anymore. Parkour is also a lot better when not viewed from shaky first-person perspective. Now I'm being harsh, but there's still some unique and innovative thrills to be had here. Sharlto Copley's role(s) are easily the best part as he flexes his acting skills.
