Dan's self-loathing and self-destructiveness both socially and emotionally were quite striking. My problems aren't his, but they spoke a lot more into my own tendencies and frustrations than works of fiction that touch on those same issues. I can't help but think of how irritated I was after watching Melancholia because it was supposedly a deep exploration of those themes and all I got was an illogical bullshit character that just was a life arsonist. I could be wrong about this though.

I knew nothing about Harmon going in, and it succeeded in making me like him and seeking out some of his work. Job well done.

This documentary succeeds really impressively in making me care about a subject I initially had no interest in, and a guy who just kind of comes across as a dick the majority of the time. Actually manages to be fairly heartwarming at times.

Self indulgent? Yes. Interesting? Also yes. Probably just for people who are already fans? Absolutely.

I didn't care about Harmon whatsoever before I watched this but it made me begin to care and even relate to him. I wish that it delved a little further into his history and creative process but that's really not what the movie is about. I really loved all the other people that the movie featured and would have loved more of it. The movie is motivating, it didn't make me want to go out and write a TV script, it made me want to be more comfortable with who I am and made me want to express that.

I don't like Dan Harmon, and I have never listened to Harmontown because of my dislike, so I don't know why I watched this documentary. However, I do enjoy the way he interacts with fans. Listen, I am trying to think of something positive, all right?

This reminded me a lot of the other great "cult of personality" documentary I saw this year, "Jodorowsky's Dune". Both Harmon and Jodo are seemingly able to draw people in with their charisma at will. However, Harmon tries to use this to help his audience heal, or at least better understand their own pain, while Jodo is sharing an artistic vision. I enjoy the Harmontown podcast but often find that it gets "too real". I sometimes have to turn it off. I wonder if that says something about me.
