HARRY DEAN STANTON: PARTLY FICTION is a mesmerizing, impressionistic portrait of the iconic actor comprised of intimate moments, film clips from some of his 250 films and his own heart-breaking renditions of American folk songs. Stunningly lensed in color and b/w by Seamus McGarvey, the film explores the actor's enigmatic outlook on his life, his unexploited talents as a musician, and includes candid scenes with David Lynch, Wim Wenders, Sam Shepard, Kris Kristofferson and Debbie Harry. guy's a legend. people complaining about the amount of singing should GET A HEART. if anything, some of the bar scenes seemed superfluous.

If you ask the greatest character actor of the last 60 years to talk about himself, and he responds by singing a mexican blues in that beautiful cracked voice, then you shut up and you listen to him sing.

Harry Dean Stanton is the man, but he sure is a gloomy man. This is a well-made documentary with some vivid imagery that emulates the mood this guy gives off. The structure is very unfussy -- he talks for a bit, sings a song, talks with friends, sings a song, drinks and talks, sings a song -- I could've done with more talking and less singing, but I sure am glad this affectionate tribute was made to this underrated actor.

Very nice character documentary that seems content at preserving the enigma (dignity) of its subject and celebrating it. More conceptually wholesome than it lets on and certainly more so than most works of its kind.

A leisurely and enjoyable stroll through the life, films and music of perhaps the most loveable character actor of all time. Subtitle comes from a Kristofferson lyric: I'd never realised they were friends.

Takes a decidedly slow pace with long silences and minimal speaking which reflects the man Harry Dean Stanton in character, but also provides for a film that is sometimes not as engaging as it should be. This documentary shows a lot about him as a person without actually offering very much information. A very large portion of the film is comprised of Harry Dean Stanton singing songs which just isn't that interesting. Unfortunately this documentary doesn't go as in depth as it should.

Enjoyable and interesting, but a bit light on content and heavy on Stanton singing various folk songs (probably taking up about a third of the runtime in total, which is pretty silly in my opinion). Not that the songs aren't enjoyable. That said, Stanton is a legend and this film is a worthy tribute.

Enjoyable, but if you didn't know about Harry Dean Stanton before it, you probably won't know much more after it. Still, it looks beautiful, with extra David Lynch
