A bit of an improvement over the first film, but Columbus's workman-like direction brings nothing to the proceedings beyond what's already on the page.

The strengths and weaknesses are roughly the same as the first film: it's a fun world but Chris Columbus's bland direction feels more like a staged reading of the book with special effects than a full-blooded movie, and it's much longer than it needs to be. Dobby is Jar Jar Binks annoying (but fortunately has limited screen time). That said, the movie is darker than the first and Alan Rickman and John Williams still fully deliver.

Rather weak, I'm afraid. The book is perhaps the most unremarkable of the series, and I wouldn't be surprised if the same ends up being true of the movie. The story has its moments, but too many things ring false -- the ending in particular. The acting is often subpar, the effects are starting to look quite dated already, and much of the magic just sort of fails to happen. It's still decent entertainment, but the third film is twice as good.

Probably the most expensive book illustration ever. There's nothing, absolutely nothing that isn't in the book, it's just taken and word for word put on film. And even though the book is good, the film is unbelievably boring. Just read it instead. The third and fourth Potter films are much, much better.

A far more satisfying tale than the first one in every way, densely packed with clever inventions, genuine thrills, and a plot that turns every few minutes. It's sometimes a struggle to keep track of all the twists, but familiarity with the book (which surely most of the intended audience will possess) aids in that endeavor. On the down side, Dobby is a most irritating creature, but then again, he's supposed to be.

While it doesn't have some of the awe of the magical world that the first had, the improvement in acting from the three stars is noticeable. Dobby is quite annoying, but the rest of the cast is great, especially with Kenneth Branagh added in.

It's like the book, and that's not a good thing. Rowling can come up with interesting names for stuff, but her characters are all one dimensional and the "fantasy" world seems to be an excuse for her inability to create sensible plot development.

It's a steady improvement. Everything good about the first remains true here: Hagrid, the friendship between the core 3, Dumbledore. Dobby is a nice addition. Special effects aren't nearly as bad. Like the first, it's deceptively dark in ways (Dobby's slavery), and it leans more outwardly into that here, which is good. I really dig the lore of this universe. The acting is better. A bit too long but that's a minor criticism. This is really close to an 80 but I won't quite put it there.

Though I remember I liked the second book more than the first one, I have to say it doesn't happen the same with the films, so I think probably something went wrong with this adaptation. Some things are better, for example CGs aren't that bad this time. I also like it's a bit darker. But please, try to keep deux-ex machina a bit in a reasonable level. Ten in ten minutes can feed up even the less demanding spectators. Otherwise, still a good fantasy movie for all ages.

The first few Harry Potter films I do not consider cinematic triumphs, even though I have a lot of affection for the books. I came to like the later movies as they strayed more from the source material, but both Chamber and Sorcerer's Stone really suffer from being slavish, literal adaptations. It feels like everything in the world of the early films is made to capitalize on the kids' media meal ticket, and once directors take a step away from the glitzy commercialism, the films become better.

Falling between the 1st Harry Potter with wonderful sense of introduction to the series and 3rd one where it turns more serious and interesting, this is my 2nd least favourite film in the franchise right after way too cold Order Of The Phoenix (2007). As a whole, film feels prolonged and maybe too disney at times, but singular scenes can be charming. It's sweet when they're still kids, and watching these early films make the later ones where they're teenagers more effective.

Nicely adapted, but as the book is - imo - the weakest of the cycle, how can the movie get better? It is another nice adventure the kids have to master but nothing else. The performances in that regard are quite good, of course actors like Kenneth Branagh and Alan Rickman stand out with their performances.

A solid but similarly restrictively-faithful sequel. Takes full and all-too-welcome advantage of the staggering improvements in effects since Sorcerer's Stone. Those not familiar with the book will be left in the dark on a few points, particularly the Polyjuice Potion. Suffers (as the book did) from one massive eye-roller of a deus ex machina at its climax. Kenneth Branagh is perfect and possibly even a little self-aware as pretty-boy superstar author Gilderoy Lockhart.

A slight improvement on the first Potter film, Chamber of Secrets suffers many of the same problems with its novel based story not translating fluidly into a three act film. Columbus ditches his storybook direction with a much less stylized approach, allowing the scenes more room to breath but removing some of the first film's quirky charm.

Building on the rock solid foundations laid by the first film, CoS successfully continues the saga, although the entry itself is more flawed than those immediately around it. There were far too many conveniences that seemed to exist only to advance the plot (possibly better explained in the book?) and I expect better, even from a children's film. Overall the tone is slightly darker, a trend that continues with the later films, but there are still plenty of light moments for younger viewers.

Again, this film in the series follows the novel almost too well. Leading to a heavy runtime. That being said. The kids performers are all getting better. The prestige UK actors are unmatched, and the special effects are brilliant. By the end of the film it makes clear that Chamber of Secrets is one of the best the Potter series has to offer.

Like the books, I preferred this over the first. It just feels more lived-in somehow. I like that it for gradually darker here without sacrificing the tone d look of what the Sorcerer’s Stone established. Production was tighter than the first (especially the effects), the three leads were better, Harry’s arc was compelling, and the mystery was legitimately fascinating. It feels a little rushed, but the gist of the original story is there alright. Great film.

While the cast keeps getting better throughout the series, Columbus at the helm again is the ultimate downfall of the movie. The second installment looks better, moves faster and contains an even darker mystery than its predecessor. 'The Chamber of Secrets' is a lot of fun, has many memorable special effects and scenery, some haunting creatures, but mostly its story is the real kicker. I had a great time with this sequel. It does everything the first film did a bit better and makes everything feel a little tighter and less drawn out despite having the same running time.
