The Whole Family Works, Mikio Naruse's adaptation of a Sunao Tokunga novel, feels more of a piece with the writer/director's quietly observant and psychologically charged later work. (Slant)

A minor Mikio Naruse with a minor family problem. Focuses on the eldest of the sons wanting to go to school so he doesn't end up like his father barely able to support his family, even with the sons help bringing home the money. The father understands, but is reluctant to grant him his wish to leave. That's typical Japanese. Make a full movie about a rather simple decision. That's alright, Naruse makes the dilemma captivating, but even for Naruse this is a little thin.

A very quiet, unassuming yet rich film.

"Something of a warm-up for the director's stylistic and thematic obsessions post-Ginza Cosmetics." - Keith Uhlich
