Unfortunately, like most of the horror franchises throughout the 80's that inspired the original "Hatchet"(2006), the first follow-up to Adam Green's new 21st century slasher is plagued by a surprising case of early-on-set sequelitis. While still certainly watchable for fans of slashers and the original, this first sequel is an 80's style bigger and dumber sequel that feels more like a contrived attempt to recapture the charms of the first instead of an organic continuation of the story.

Lacked a lot of the "film out of nowhere" charm of the original, but still, it had some good gore, so not a total waste. And I almost choked on my food (from laughter) during the unexpected "chicken, biscuit, gravy" song!

Although still an improvement over the dopey slasher movies that inspired it (Green still makes an effort to make the non-killing scenes entertaining w/ humor (that unfortunately rarely works) & charismatic actors playing characters that aren't interchangable), it's a drop in quality from the 1st. There are 2 big contrivances: having the heroine go back is highly implausible & Zombie requesting her uncle should tip her off. Worst of all is the switch to digital video that looks incredibly cheap

It's a step down from the first, lacking the comic charm that made that one stand out. Danielle Harris fills the lead role well enough & Tony Todd is typically excellent, but beyond those two, nobody in this is worth caring about- not even Victor Crowley himself, who is decidedly more human this go-round & who cares more about flashy kills & jumpscares than he perhaps should. The expanded lore is iffy, & the new characters all suck. Still, it's watchable enough & has plenty of brutal gore.

Right along the vein of the first one. It has one of the most gruesome kills I've seen: a guy gets torn in half, then the skin gets ripped off his top half, then his top half gets thrown into some trees. He is alive through the whole ordeal. If you liked the first one, this one will be right up your alley.

the first film was a knowing and loving nod to slasher films and their shitty sequels. this one was simply a shitty slasher sequel. the attempts at humor were mostly ham handed and annoying. i do love tony todd though, and the gore is just as fun, squishy, and theatrical as the first film.

Some nice gore effects which hide behind a terrible story.

The first one was highly entertaining, but this was just as dull as possible. Green had decided to shed every aspect of the first that made it good an crapped out a horror movie stereotype with nothing of value. This is particularly sad because I've got a thing for Tony Todd.

I didn't like the first one much, and liked this one slightly more. Danielle Harris' performance was absolutely terrible and almost made it unwatchable. However, there some pretty cool death scenes and some pretty funny lines.

Danielle Harris' acting is pretty damn awful. I was glad that Tony Todd got a bigger role though. I also liked how they expanded the mythology of Victor Crowley. Unfortunately, it seemed like the writer didn't have enough material for 90 minutes and a lot of the stuff in the middle drags. Where the filmmakers really upped their game was with the kills and the gore. They were much more creative and ridiculous this time, and I was cool with that. Overall, a serviceable sequel.

Miles ahead of the first film, not just in carnage but in plotting and humour (the first film, for all its effort, was devoid of the two). Adam Green shows a lot of improvement, and indeed arguably succeeds in making the 80s slasher throwback the original was intended to be. The problem, however, is the ignorant and hypocritical notion - spearheaded by Green himself - that he is "rescuing" horror. Horror is doing just fine, buddy. And it can't be rescued by deliberately derivative B-horror.

An even more in-your-face reminder of mortality than the first one. I'm not just giving this points for gore; it genuinely horrified me.

actually a bit better than the first one, imo (but still terrible, obviously). Danielle Harris slays.

We are all here for the gore gags and Green's sequel certainty pays out dividends. Everything else, however, is sillier and cheaper looking than the original. Still enjoyable, perhaps even just to see Danelle Harris get her hands dirty (real dirty).
