90 minutes of tourists in a swamp literally running around in a circle from a killer who's easy to kill but never dies, and always seems to be right behind them. I'm finally starting to realize "inspired by horror classics" is just a nice way of saying "features lots of horror tropes," and "starring Robert Englund" is just the filmmaker admitting to the audience "I'm not even really trying, but look, it's Freddy!"

Neither really a parody nor an overtly self-aware deconstruction of the genre, this is actually a legit return to the slasher film, but one smart enough to try & improve on all the worst cliches (all the victims are played by charismatic actors and Green tries to make all their interactions funny instead of flat and banal); and to amplify the best parts (the killer's origin & look & the giddily outrageous levels of fake gore). The comedy doesn't always work, but it is fun, esp the last third.

When not entertaining on account of gore, it impressed with tongue-in-cheek humor. The acting and writing both compliment the humor and horror, all the while saving a few scary sequences for the people really thinking this was a true horror movie.

While I know by now a few years may have passed, but this is nothing like that book I remember reading in middle school. I mean like yeah sure, I guess there's a hatchet involved, but this much more like some sort of self-aware late 2000's slasher instead of the young-adult survival story that I was expecting. Although, I sort of kinda got a slightly different young-adult survival story instead, just with a couple more people, way more gore, and with enough boobs for even 12-year-old me.

One of the best "new" horror films. Straight up slasher old school style that is actually well done.

A lot of fun to watch. The film's mantra was getting back to old-school slasher horror and being a fan of the genre, I liked that aspect. I also enjoyed the horror cameos. Mercedes McNab was also in it and she was really topless. I mean, funny! And topless. I liked the New Orleans setting and there were pretty decent special effects for an independent film. It doesn't take itself seriously at all, which is what makes it so enjoyable. It doesn't pretend to be anything more than what it is.

At its best this kind of reminded me of Bad Taste but mostly lacks the creativity and wicked sense of childish humour. A collection of cliches that means well but doesn't really amount to anything more than a sum of its variously mediocre parts. At least it's not as cynical as most modern slashers and packs enough fun bits to make it passable.

To put it briefly, a straight-up color-by-numbers slasher. The pluses: It's well-shot, the special/make-up effects are excellent, and it's funny with some decent characters. The minuses: It's very rushed, which makes the story suffer. Overall, very close to what a traditional slasher film should be.

Green doesn't reimagine the slasher genre, but he takes what works and amplifies the shit out if. Case in point: that ending.

Hatchet is an unpretentious throwback to the slasher movies of the eighties. It's obviously made by folks who love those flicks and, save for several gore effects that would have gotten the 80s-era MPAA up in arms and the presence of some modern-day mainstays like cell phones, this movie could have very well been written in 1982. The humor is hit-or-miss, but it is refreshing that Adam Green does not rely on the "self aware" humor that so many throwback horror movies do.

While no masterpiece & not quite the Scream of the 2000's, this is a deceptively funny & very self-aware slasher that provides intentionally dumb characters, exaggerated situations, & brutally over-the-top murders while knowing exactly what it's doing the entire time. The jokes are surprisingly good, as is the loving mockery of genre tropes, & the performances are solid all-around. Englund's cameo is really fun. It doesn't totally stick the landing, but it's worth a watch.

Below average; "new wave of american horror" my fucking ass. If this is the new wave then horror is dead, and not coming back. Not as a zombie, not as a mummy, not as a vampire, not as a ghost, not as a demon, not as a reincarnation, not as a toy, not as anything.

A fun modern day slasher flick. You may not enjoy it as much if you are not very familiar with the sub genre to see all the necessary components. I am not a slasher expert but luckily I had one sitting next to me when I watched this movie. I will admit, the humor is a little on the tacky almost annoying side but the gore is neat and the scares are adequate. Watch this movie with a group of friends for a fun time.

Hatchet is not good old-school horror, it's just lame. It begins promisingly enough and tricks you into believing that you're in for a nice, character-driven slasher... and then the actual plot kicks in, only there's no plot anymore at that point since the creators apparently thought that throwing a bunch of people in the middle of a swamp and systemically tearing them apart with no story progression or build-up in-between is good enough. It's not. It's lame. LAME.

Adam Green is a terrible writer and an ok director who has an eye for death scenes, but not much else. If it weren't for Kane Hodder as Crowley, this film would have been long forgotten.

Cringe. Gore FX are above average for 2007 but the characters all fit into the mega-obnoxious confrontational ensemble cast thing that horror was doing all through the 90s and early 00s. The Louisiana swamp setting has no personality at all beyond dark horror forest #7835. There's no tension, no atmosphere, and really nothing memorable at all. The trope awareness and bad horror movie that knows it's bad schtick is terrible far more often than its even slightly good, and Hatchet is no exception.

Not a bad slasher movie, but it feels like it was made a couple decades too late. If it had come along in the 80s, it might be a long-running franchise like Friday the 13th or Halloween, but as it is now, it has kind of a generic feel to it. It's got several interesting death scenes, but no gimmick that really distinguishes it from other horror movies. The killer is basically the same as Jason Voorhees, but without the hockey mask and machete.

The problem with Horror Comedies is that sometimes, like this one, there is no Horror neither Comedy enough to worth watching it. If we summon the fact that there are two characters that show off her tits a lot that makes it almost unwatchable. Englund? Five minutes or less. There are three!!! B**ch please, stop it on the first one.

It's okay to make a sucky slasher film, they're fun too. It's problematic when you make a sucky slasher film predicated on being "funny" and "self aware" and fail to deliver on both parts. Green seems to think that making a reductively derivative throwback film constitutes self awareness, whereas it betrays the very notion. I enjoyed the creative kills and the setting, so Green gets points there.

"Hatchet" looks like a very cheap exploitative slasher flick which obviously is,yet its oddly fresh and original.with inspiration drew from 70's infamous slasher like Friday The 13th and Halloween,it lies between its fond of gory thrill and campy fun.the backdrop of southern swamps provide the flick something new, while the sadistic killer Victor Crowley in form of the more ghostly jason vorhees delivered a nostalgic throwback of the sub genre. Expect nothing less from looping plot.
