Dom DeLuise is in drag and it is the driest thing imaginable.

Noble effort by Wilder to pay tribute to old school haunted house horror comedies (plus his own YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN) suffers as many of his solo efforts do by leaning into crude humour ala Mel Brooks - Gene doesn't have the heart for crudity or even elaborate slapstick and is clearly more comfortable indulging in elaborate puns and wordplay (Pringle's senile butler is arguably the only conceit that works). Good spirits, and DeLuise in a flowy gown descending a staircase, keep this watchable.

An old radio murder mystery acted out by live performers. Dopey but harmless fun.

Feels like someone uncaringly chopped up a longer movie. Long slow setup and incredibly rushed conclusion.

Wilder had good intentions, but this Brooks inspired farce is extemely disappointing given the talent involved. His aesthetic goals are clear: to recreate the look of old Universal classic horrors ala Young Frankenstein. But where Brooks' film was both a loving tribute and parody, this mimics the look of those films for no good reason other than to set a lame story there. The cast are visibly straining for laughs because Wilder failed to supply them with sufficient comic material.

Gene Wilder himself rips off _Young Frankenstein_. Pathetic.

Mainly unfunny spoof: all concerned should have taken a closer look at _The Cat and the Canary_.

I think I had fun with this as a young child but watching it again over 30 years later I see a great cast and fun concept that are really wasted. There seems to be massive problems with the script, editing or both as the focus and plot just seems to chop and change randomly leaving an unsatisfying mess of a comedy. With a cast of genuinely funny actors HH does provide a few laughs but even then they feel lighter than they should be. I'm not sure I'll want to watch this again in another 30 years

Rather low-brow eighties fare. Mel Brooks' influence on Wilder is discernible.

A fun 80's film with a Monty Python-ish feel.
