Head-On

Typically, the problem with this type of redemption movie is the way the characters lose all their vitality on the way to normalcy, and suck the life out of the picture in the process. Akin can't avoid this entirely, but the incredible misanthropic energy of Ünel and the luminous Kekilli carry it much farther than I anticipated. Akin roots it all effectively in cultural friction, patiently turning a plot device into a foundation for his characters and their overriding alienation.

It's quite good, especially the second half. The characters go through a transformation, and it's both heartbreaking as uplifting (in a strange way..) to watch. I also like how it shows the Turkish culture

Scorching tale of two Turkish immigrants in Germany, who meet in a hospital after both attempt suicide, and how their marriage of convience (she wants to escape her controlling family) leads to unexpected developments; a bit sluggish at times, but ultimately very rewarding, thanks a script written with depth and affection, and especially due to the unforgettable performances of the two leads.

Strong movie about human unexplainable condition...

Very well written story of Turkish honour and marriage for girls. Escape, freedom and unexpected emotions. Both main actors were good, especially Briol Ûnel. The directing was time after time a bit sluggish, but otherwise well done. The story was segmented nicely with short, funny songs related to the plot.

Loses quite a bit of steam in the third act, but still an engaging, interesting film overall.

The poster reads "Raw, powerful, extraordinary..." and that pretty much clinches it.

Another great movie by the obviously gifted Fatih Akin.

It's modern Yesilcam melodrama. Tragical events, two people, postmodern scenes and sad love story...

A powerful piece of film making, a moving story and an interesting cultural context.

A potentially strong story if everything wasn't overdone to the point that it spirals out of control after the first act. From then on it's just about how long you can take of people getting wasted, spanked, fucked and cut on their limbs by shattering glass repeatedly. By the end it has completely lost its message, if it ever had one.

Love is such a desert

Alcohol. Cut yourself. Drink more. Drugs. Sex. Sex. More of the bottle. Then..surprise twist...someone else cuts themselves. While a bit tiring, Head-On is pretty powerful while taking an earnest look at a bizarre love story.

One of the best films I've ever seen, and one I could rewatch constantly.

I do so love these off-the-beaten-path romance flicks.

Not a film I remember much about but with a sex scene with the male character getting all sweaty and being able to F. SO long undoubtedly only a circumcised (Turkish...) man can...quite impressive... that mental image stays with me after all those years. Made it worth watching the film.

Rough, intense drama brings to mind LEAVING LAS VEGAS by way of Lars von Trier – the problem is that Akin’s handling of this unpleasant material is functional and rote, and our two “heroes” are not fleshed out beyond being defined by their severe psychological problems, which leaves the film with a hollow, and vaguely exploitative, aftertaste. There is no faulting the performances from Ünel and Kekilli who commit 100% to their portraits of ugliness, but they can’t outweigh the film’s faults.

Not all of the acting is on point, and some parts of the story are overdone, but it moves fast and has plenty of interesting locations. A soundtrack for the gods.

The tone is almost a black comedy and it's both funny and powerfully moving.

En skikkelig møkkete film der vi møter to mennesker som gifter seg av av nødvendighet, for så å sakte begynne å faller for hverandre. Den mannlige hovedrollen imponerte mest, spesielt med tanke på hvor godt han spiller dritings. En sint og intens film med mye på hjertet, men noe dårlig formuleringsevne.

Fatih Akın'ın yönetimi, farklı tarzı, cesur oyunculukları, zamanı iyi yöneten kurgusuyla başyapıt. Filmin sonunda, herkes sevdiğine böyle mi yanar? Yine mi güzeliz yine mi çiçek?

(...)Möglich, dass diesen Charakteren nie etwas Gutes im Leben widerfahren wird, egal was sie auch versuchen. Ihre Heirat beschleunigt nur die Abwärtsspirale beider. Immer wieder wird diese durch den Auftritt einer traditionellen türkischen Kapelle in Istanbul untermalt. Ist es so, dass Fatih Akin doch irgendwo ein romantisches Ende sieht? Oder nur die Möglichkeit dessen? Gegen die Wand ist auch ein Film voller Sehnsucht.

Messy but heartfelt tale of two outsiders caught between Turkey and Germany. Although it veers into overwrought soap territory at times, it's never boring.

Painfully real

Impressive, memorable, well-made story, with strong detail of characters. Message is clear but not at all pedantic.

good movie

Fatih Akin is one of the best filmmakers in Europe and won with "Head-On" many awards, including European Film Awards. This is drama in its best. Its difficult to find a better performance that Birol Ünel did here.

It grew on me. After laughter, I guess.
