Generally considered to be one of Altman's more underrated movies, HealtH takes a satirical look behind the scenes at a health-food convention at a Florida luxury hotel, where a powerful political organization is deciding on a new president. The election is rife with backroom deals and scandal. (Wikipedia.org)

Everyone is crazy and deluded, with the exception of Woodard, perhaps Cavett, and just possibly Garner. Seems to express, satirically, a moment of transition from the 1970s to the 1980s, as ideas of the public interest and political ideals in general regress to being nothing more than forms of marketing for a democratic process that has become merely a grotesque televisual carnival. No surprise, then, that Reagan, after watching it in the White House, described it as "the world's worst movie".

Something is lame about this one; maybe I am tired of sophomoric gripes about political theater, however relevant in an election year. Or maybe it could be said that while the subject matter is quirky, by no stretch of the imagination is it carving its own path through the topic, and that treading these well-traveled roads is the same kind of middlebrow crowd-pleasing it purports to critique. Cavett is amusing with a substantial role as himself.

Really a lot better than I expected it to be, especially for a film that was disowned by the studio and has basically never seen a real release of any kind. It's ultimately a very fun movie, with a few nice performances in its cast. It's all very zany, but definitely enjoyable. There are a lot of Altman films that are a hell of a lot harder to sit through than this one.

The satire is brazen, obvious, and sometimes crass - but not as crass and as crude as the behaviour of the supposed democratic electoral candidates in the film. A great cast, full of funny moments with a hefty dose of bitter cynicism. As this appears to have no home release I urge fans of meandering, easy-going, wickedly funny Altman movies to seek it out.

Curious the reception this would have if aired nationwide amidst the political scenario at the moment.

Altman was a great rambler, but on his off days he was tedious, even downright bad, and Health's relative obscurity is not undeserved as it's a forgettable retread of ideas explored better elsewhere. e.g.Nashville. Its political critique is laboured and self satisfied, and it never achieves any kind of weight. There are some mildly amusing scenes, but overall it's autopilot Altman, lacking discernible shape and form.
