Heart of Midnight

This is a weird one. It has a straight-to-video/David Lynch rip-off feel to it, but it has it's moments and there are some nice visuals scattered throughout the film. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Peter Coyote give solid performances, and there are interesting names in smaller roles like Rebhorn and a very young Buscemi. The remaining cast is very amateurish and the film is finally ruined by a ridiculous finale and a really bad performance by Gale Mayron.

A movie so off I think I might've watched it sideways. Like iconogassed I was totally blind on entrance but it sounds like I was more impressed with the overall product in spite of its finish. I guess I just haven't run into that much recently that has been this comfortable being out of the comfort zone. Reminded me in ways of Backtrack/Catchfire except that it felt less narratively sound. Maybe it's just been too long since I've watched Twin Peaks but I'm always for being weirded out.

Depressing curio with Jennifer Jason Leigh as an unstable alt girl with great clothes who inherits her weird uncle's haunted sex club after he dies of AIDS. Sounds like a parody of the stuff that got her typecast (she also gets raped by Steve Buscemi), but it's all too real. I had no idea where it was going most of the way (I went in totally blind) and there is a consistently unsettling atmosphere, with some interesting visual touches. But it doesn't stick the landing at all.
