It's just so strange. That diversion into plantation life, the climactic intervention of Naploeon's mom! It's just the weirdest weirdest weirdest movie.

This one came at the end of Marion Davies' movie career and I'm not sure what they were going for here. It tries to be a drama of sorts, but honestly Davies' range doesn't really cover drama. Her thing was always comedy, so it's miss fit for her. And it didn't really connect much the younger leading man she herself selected - Dick Powell. Just about the only one that does deliver a good performance is naturally Claude Rains as Napoleon. Not his greatest part, but miles above everyone else.
