Hearts of the World

Dorothy Gish provides a good comic relief and is genuinely amusing in her role as The Little Disturber - a couple of scenes of great comedic quality, all in her posture, facial expressions and interaction with the other actors. Lilian on the other hand is cute and overacting in a bad way. A shallow propaganda piece where German soldiers are stereotypical one-sided douchebags, and "the good" win at the end of the day. Violence is up there too - I think I saw a man cut in half. Great production.

Griffith brings his usual skill with battle sequences to modern warfare in a nice looking but ultimately silly story. Subtlety wasn't often his strong suit, and he eggs on some awful overacting in this. Lillian is so sweet and/or distraught (and what a close up of her ankles), Dorothy so impish, the Germans so brutish, etc. And all this is saddled with Griffith's usual self-aggrandizement, florid inter-titles denouncing the evils of war while the plot encourages everyone to go enlist, etc.
