Too long. And Pacino hams it up every which way (as he will do from time to time). DeNiro is suitably DeNiro-esque, but...the scene in the coffee shop where they confront each other played like two legends appearing on the same talk show. The whole thing looked like some prank.

Gritty and ruthless action coupled with a poignant study of how man's life can be consumed by his work, his duty, and/or his principles, and how that affects the people he loves. All of the characters are rich and compelling, and they're played by a fantastic group of actors. I loved the way Mann photographed L.A. in "Collateral" and likewise here. All in all, one of the most satisfying crime/action films I've seen.

There are some highly implausible contrivances (the diner meet-up between the 2 stars; Brenneman's decision 2 stay) & for some the idea of exploring the inner lives of criminals may feel incongruous, but for fans of character-driven drama (especially watching 2 legitimately intelligent characters square off), unforgettable performances & killer set-pieces (heists & shootouts don't come better than this), this is arguably the greatest cops and robbers film ever made.

The Swiss watch of the crime genre, and it is ticking down to the climactic showdown the entire running time. It's also the best cinematic tribute to Los Angeles besides Chinatown, freeway lights barely illuminating the darkness. Heat is the pinnacle of De Niro and Pacino's late careers; after this they both have been reduced to self parody (Pacino's already begun in this film, but he's so damn entertaining). Could stand to lose the Portman subplot though.

The story makes a commentary between the psychological and technical intricacies of police and robbers. The screenplay is full of grounded drama and quotable scenes. But Mann's craftsmanship builds on it via photography inspired by paintings and a great electronic soundtrack. Some say it's too long, but I'm okay as spending time with these characters is a treat. It's both a movie for guys who like movies as well as such a part of the Film Bro Canon that it influenced The Dark Knight. Classic.

I remember being SO excited when I heard this was getting made because I'd seen Mann's TV version of this story, "L.A. Takedown" before and loved it. And I was not disappointed. De Niro plus Pacino plus excellent gun battles plus Michael Mann's cool big-city aesthetics plus fast-paced excitement balanced against compelling human interest equals a fantastic movie.

Some days after work, I get off the Dash and straight down 5th in Downtown LA, precisely where the film's infamous shootout takes place, for a long walk. This time of introspection puts me right in the soul of the film - looking at the passers by, one could see a world of cutthroats and Demons, trying to survive in this Island of Lost Souls they call The City of Angels. It's a world of people denying themselves, desperately seeking connection. Everything in this film screams for connection.

Heat explores the white-hat-vs.-black-hat old west mythos, but the romance is stripped bare, revealing cops and criminals driven by a dangerous need for adrenaline ("For me, the action is the juice") at the expense of their personal lives ("All I am is what I'm going after"). There are no heroes here, because sheer professionalism for its own sake has driven these mens' souls deep beneath the surface, with only the possibility of death to remind them of their own still-beating hearts.

This was a great movie. Alike some of Mann's other movies, Heat is well acted from it's cast and had awesome directing from the start. De Niro and the rest of the cast are solid and I love Al Pacino. While it's insanely long, I liked the music score and the movie never gets boring or too slow for 171 minutes. Loved the ending. Easily some of Mann's best work.

Michael Mann is my favorite director and this is his best film. I am a crime thriller junkie, and this is the best of the genre. The style, tone, and mood of this film and all other Mann films appeal to me immensely. Mann has borrowed from Fuller, JP Melville, and Peckinpah to great effect. DeNiro and Pacino are perhaps my favorite actors, and they are never better than this film. Soundtrack/score is off the hook. Heat has everything that I look for in a film.

Frustrating, because there's an interesting character study in here somewhere. Both Pacino and De Niro offer fleeting glimpses of their obsession, their drive and their flaws, but find their characters swamped by an unwieldy runtime, ponderous pacing and a labyrinthine plot that goes off on pointless tangents way too often.

Saw this after I was underwhelmed by Mann's "Public Enemies", just to see if his "classic" was any good - It is! Pacino as at his hammy best here (but a little TOO much at times..."GREAT ASS!") and DeNiro is great in what was his last role before trading in his career as a serious actor for that of a pandering goofball in dopey comedies. Besides the wonderfully executed action scenes, the quieter moments and bit characters elevated the material above a traditional cops 'n robbers caper.

Mann perfected his vision of LA at night in Collateral, but this film has the benefit of being the ultimate cops-and-robbers epic. Very few crime dramas are done with this much authenticity, and never with such great pacing. Think about it, every male under the age of 35 loves this movie...and its 3 hours with one action scene. Of course, that action is terrific.

So...long... The climax happens and then it's almost another movie's worth of revenge. The women are mostly uninteresting so all the scenes about the men's home life just seem so unnecessary because it doesn't affect their work or give them any different insight at work. De Niro and Pacino have good scenes. Danny Trejo and Val Kilmer have strong presences. Fav scene: bank robbery leading into improbable street shootout.

It's rare to see characters like this portrayed so well. Rugged individualists with hard ass seriousness, valuing professionalism above all else. It reminds me of a dying/dead archetype that Americans used to demand in their leadership. I'm imagining George Washington or Andrew Jackson beating someone senseless with a hickory stick for ass kissing instead of doing the goddamn job right, and then sitting down and really enjoying this film.

I played a little game with myself called "Pretend Al Pacino Isn't Famous," and discovered that he's distractingly bad and inauthentic in this movie. Hardly breaking new ground here, but it's true. Like if I were casting a fictitious movie and Al Pacino auditioned for a part with 1 line, I'd say "that guy is the worst actor ever, no way." Anyways, here's a half-assed review. Much has been written about the the amazing shootout this movie has, or seeing De Niro and Pachino on screen together for the first time, and to be fair both of these aspects are incredible. This might have been a good movie with a director actually interested in--or capable of--shaping the material. As it is, it's bloated and essentially dull. Nothing rings true or feels even remotely plausible. I normally like Al Pacino, but when he's bad (like he is here--all bluster and self-caricature...and those bug eyes..), there's definitely something wrong. With NO help from the director, Amy Brenneman alone manages to make something of her scenes.

It does some interesting things with the narrow genre, but I don't think that its minimalistic, slow cinematography is completely justified. Mann is a unique (not necessarily in a good way) director and not a great writer. There are characters that should've been developed but weren't, a flaw masked by the film's supposed gritty realism. It is far from real, as a suitable and appropriate alternative title would be "Unlimited Ammo." Worth a viewing, though.

De Niro and Pacino score strongly in Michael Mann's crime epic; overlong and often times needlessly cluttered with stray story threads and characters, and self-conscious touches ("The Diner Scene"), but rip-roaring action sequences, and some genuinely touching moments in Pacino's family life, and De Niro's romantic relationship, help the film flirt with greatness at times. Watch for a young Natalie Portman excelling in an all-to-brief role and a bizarre mustachioed supporting bit by Jon Voight!

I can give you three reasons this is a great movie: 1) De Niro. 2) Pacino. 3) Their scenes together. There were other reasons too, but they deliver most of the brilliance and power of this film by the way they commit to their jobs, fail as people, and serve as foils to each other. It can be overdone at times, but most of the time it's done exactly right.

So De Niro risks it all for...Amy Brenneman. Hahaha. As a badass display of stone cold professionalism it can't be beaten. I would have been happy with three hours of McCauley's team prepping and executing jobs. But I'm forgiving a lot of bad shit, most of it involving Pacino in full-on Scent of a Woman mode and his character's insipid soap opera of a personal life. Those heists, though. Barring some superb acting by De Niro, Heat unfortunately didn't live up to the hype. Simply put, I found a lot of the film unnecessary. There's a very slow build-up introducing the viewer to each member of the De Niro's crew, but by the end of the film I could barely remember their names. Pacino plays an unhinged cop well, but the unhinged part is unnecessary (or overacted). At its core, Heat is about loneliness, illustrated best by their shared diner scene.
