An interesting precursor to such films as The Petrified Forest and Bus Stop, Heat Lightning takes place in a remote California-desert gas station-café. Several strange characters pass through the establishment's portals during one fateful 24-hour period, including cad-and-bounder George (Preston S. Foster). Resourceful proprietress Olga (Aline MacMahon) tries to remain detached throughout but is forced to take drastic action when George threatens to seduce and abandon her own sister Myra... This was a decent drama filled with atmosphere and good acting. The ending was a bit melodramatic but it was an entertaining watch.

A tight pre code where you get to see the real america on screen. A sad reminder of what we lost due to the puritanical American mindset. Love movies where you can feel the impact of weather. Where it bottles up the characters and forces them to make decisions they might not have pondered. Broken women at the mercy of evil men. Women yearning to break their patriarchal bonds only to be reminded of the stark truth of American life. Freedom at the hands of a gun.

A pleasant out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere movie as Aline MacMahon runs a desert gas station with her sister Ann Dvorak. MacMahon is really the backbone of this one coming across believable as someone who lives along the quiet road. The atmosphere of this whole thing gets to you and they put in enough happenings during the 24-hours we spend at the gas station to fill this 'B' movie. A really well done movie making the most out of just about every scene.
