Shot on location in Trinidad and Tobago and starring two compelling leads, this film has serious "African Queen" energy. It's a substantially different film in many ways though. The relationship between Mitchum and Kerr is not built around conflict so much as the two making good faith efforts to bridge the enormous gulf separating their experiences in life.

An endearing movie about a nun and a marine who form an unlikely friendship stuck together on an Island during the war. Mitchum, especially, moves me as he plays a tough, uneducated, yet humble and gentle soldier. One question that irritates me, however, is when the Japanese returned to this seemingly empty island, did they have unlimited ammunition and artillery to assault the emptiness with?

I wish they had kept in the bit where Mitchum convinces the Japanese to leave them alone with his spirited rendition of "Swanee"

Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr are an odd but endearing chemistry. A reprisal for Kerr, again playing a nun under the pressures of an extreme environment and temptation. The running theme is a comparison of each character's rigorous devotion to their respective institutions, but its observations on the juxtaposition of faith and war are dull. Still an impressive and modern production, indulging on-location grit in a visceral way few other American action adventures of the era could achieve.

To be sure, Huston reuses quite a few beats from his own classic, The African Queen, but this is still tremendous old-fashioned entertainment with fine acting and chemistry between the two leads.

I love Kerr and Mitchum but they are ill-served by a limp script and tiresome pacing.
