Good soundtrack, funny in parts but when I finished I simply couldn't find the point of it. I guess I was looking for something more but as a 2 hour music video it's pretty impressive. Great cast. I suppose if wanton violence, huge animated breasts and heavy metal really turns your crank then check this out. It's just like it sounds, however, so if that doesn't sound like "your bag" you can miss this for sure.

The crowning achievement in nerd wish fulfillment. Looks like one of those cheap educational Christian cartoons and I wouldn't be surprised to find out it's the same company. Aggressively stupid. However, I found myself enjoying the middle segment with the pilots and that Deadmau5 lookin' spaceship was cool.

I understand that 14-year-old boys had less options for smut back in 1981, but you'd still think they could find something better than this. There are interesting elements in this, taken from the original comics, but they're done in a flat, by-the-numbers way, within a structure that absolutely doesn't support by-the-numbers storytelling, ending up with no story being told at all. Plus, its idea of sexual appeal begins and ends at "titties are good". They are but that doesn't cut it!!!

Passable, but hardly lives up to its nostalgic rep. A little heavy on the rotoscoping, and the scenes Elmer Bernstein scored are much preferable to the distracting rock music that fills out the rest. I guess I missed the boat, having seen it in my twenties rather than as a sexually overenthusiastic, hormonal teenager.

I forgot about this movie until south park parodied it. I went to the store the next day and bought it cause I remembered how much I loved this movie when I was younger. Some of the cartoon stories are simple and great, some are just rediculous. The last main story was probably my least favorite. This movie also has one of the best soundtracks out there. So much wonderful 80s metal.

It's one of the few modern (you have to remember that at first all animated movies were aimed at adults (think private snafu) ) animated movies that were created primarily for adults. As for the movie, I have to say the soundtrack is generally pretty good. All of the segments are based on the "heavy metal" magazine, and in my opinions are hit-or-miss. I personally only really liked the "captain stern" segment, all others were in my opinion pretty forgettable.

Made for and by 13-year old boys in a pre-internet age when cartoon boobs were the best porn a hormone-ridden teen could hope for. The stories are uniformly terrible, the animation is poor, the women are anatomically unfeasible and the music is a who's who of dull middle-of-the-road pop-rock. Utterly awful.

The old-school animation has a certain warmth to it, the soundtrack features several illustrious rock and metal bands of the day (Black Sabbath stands out with "The Mob Rules"), and the "B-17" segment has Dan O'Bannon's stamp all over it and thus is head and shoulders above the lot - the lot being a bunch of invariably below par, unoriginal stories tied together in a lazy manner and replete with large-breasted female characters that undress within seconds for the teen boy audience to drool over.

Heavy Metal represents one of my great teenage film memories. Back in the day, before the porn repository known as the internet was formed, Heavy Metal was edgy stuff. As a young teen, Heavy Metal was everything a kid my age wanted to see - sex, drugs, rock-n-roll, violence, defiance of authority, and hot chicks! Add the most awesome hard rock soundtrack, and Heavy Metal became the drug of choice for young folk back then.

Sought this out solely because of the South Park parody (which is great), wow this is terrible as an actual film. The only somewhat decent part was the section that didn't have any women, the zombie bomber crew one. Meanwhile the John Candy VO story is one of the most embarrassing things I've ever experienced. Very ugly animation.

That first noirish story is not bad, even if it still has the juvenile tone of the rest of the film. But everything only gets worse from there as the stories are just excuses to show death and boobies on screen. It is sometimes amusing just how silly everything is, but it gets old. I also don't like the art style.

More of a trippy sensory experience than anything representing a cohesive narrative; more buys in to the developing sci-fi trend of the early 80s rather than representing anything influential in of itself, but it’s still entertaining and enjoyable on its own terms, especially if you can channel the 12 year old boy in you who is very easily... titillated. Animation is top notch, and it’s fun to hear Candy show up as a talisman in (almost) each episode.

With stilted acting, hilariously stupid dialogue, and a story that makes no sense, all of which seem intentional (how can they not be), a curious question is raised... It evoked this sentiment kind of like finding dad's hidden porno stash in the closet. Like the creators assumed their audience would be BLOWN AWAY by the presence of BOOBS in a CARTOON. I was hoping it would be like the metal version of Fantasia, which would be awesome without compare... But everything kind of falls short, from the animation to the plot to the music at times. Still, it can be appreciated for its campiness at this point if nothing else.

Far too much pointless gratuitous flabby tits, and at times plotlines that really go nowhere. I really kinda wish they'd stick with the Harry Canyon story throughout the whole movie as that was the most interesting and enjoyable story to me, especially since it oddly reminded me of one of my favorite comics, Transmetropolitan. Most of the stories in this movie were random shit you'd see in a heavy metal music video which, while stylish, aren't particularly interesting otherwise.

You cant have 9 segments of porn star-like naked women in a movie and expect me to take seriously the one time you try to make one look majestic. The movie is so incohesive from segment to segment of what little plot it is that connects them that there is no significance of anything that happens. A movie called Heavy Metal that only has one song that could be considered that. Gratuitous amounts of tits and 70s bush that serve no purpose but to show what "boundaries" can be pushed in animation.

Like the magazine that spawned it, this is a string of generic horny adolescent power fantasies, which is fantastic if ur a 13 yo male. The final segment provides the only interesting visuals simply b/c they seem 2 have been worked on as much as every other segment put together. Unfortunately the filmmakers choose 2 highlight this work by laboriously lingering over each one of these animation cels like they were inspired by Michelangelo & not the apparently uncredited work of Moebius.

Yeah, agree with others that this is basically the nerdiest thing ever. I was kind of enjoying it also for how it defines everything mediocre about the 80's pop mainstream, and how its a bit Lord of the Rings (the shit animated one) and then a whole lot of Masters of the Universe. However much I can eke out from that which amounts to something resembling pleasure, the amount of it endured and the utter shittiness of some segments mean it's not really worthwhile.
