The presence of Gene Hackman certainly helps.

This film is full of "Mamet-isms" with dialog such as "they call it money because it's money" and other lines that are supposed to be somehow profound but are entirely stilted as well as contrived. Mamet's writing usually seems like it comes out of one of those expensive Hollywood screenwriting workshops and not at all how real people talk unless they have Asperger's syndrome or something similar. Glengarry Glenn Ross is still the only decent movie he's written.

What a bunch of crap. This movie suffers from a poor script - evidenced by the lame dialogue. It also doesn't help that "The Score" came out a few months before, and while it's no masterpiece, I enjoyed it much more.

Multiple layers of plans in this story of daring high profile daylight robberies. The plot holes add up quickly as the story twists and turns time and again. Excellent cast of characters. Great dramatic action. You never quite know where things are going, so when you think you have things figured out, there is another twist to prove you wrong. But, the writers soured the ending with a stupid gun battle and one final betrayal that was unnecessary and out of character.

To a greater degree than in other Mamets, the dialogue threatens to suffocate the action (Jay's "My motherfucker's so cool..." when the cops show up). More often it's funny (the bible bit) or makes you snap to like this stuff never do ("Your weight and your fate"). For all the rigidity and repetition, there is a real sense of play. Never really occurred to me that the ancestor to whom Mamet's dialogue bears the strongest resemblance might be Gertrude Stein's prose (which I find quite comely).

Every time you think there can't possibly be another double-cross, another one drops. There must have been like five double-crosses in the final 10 minutes alone. Makes no sense if you really think about it but it's hype to watch in the moment.

Very close to being my least favorite Mamet script. If you can keep your eyes from rolling out of your skull, the other enormous talents on display should suffice.

A solid heist movie with a great cast. Like other Mamet films the dialogue was great. Unfortunately like other Mamet films the multiple twists feel unbelievable. If you can suspend disbelief its a very entertaining movie.

HEIST is ultimately a disappointment for a writer who has done much better, a director who hasn't grasped the technical aspects of cinema, and a group of actors who are all past their prime. It's a group of old dogs clinging to an old-fashioned style of cinema and you can almost hear the creak and see the cobwebs in every frame of this dinosaur.

Not particularly deep, but it's a lot of damn fun. I'm sure people will hate this film for the reasons I love it -- the ridiculously twisty-turvy story, the quintessential snarky Mamet dialogue, and the slightly less than implausible but brilliantly staged heist itself. The cast here is excellent (I don't think I've seen DeVito any better) and they really fulfill their hard-as-nails roles and seem like they're having a ball with all their lines. Go see this with your dad

The setup here- master thief gets made during a job- never amounts to anything. In fact, there's no conflict with the law at all; the law is obviously too stupid to be relevant in Mamet's world. The conflict's with other thieves, so we get a bunch of people trying to rip each other off; it's honestly hard to care. The moral of the story: If ever your shady underworld boss sends you down to the docks with a dozen other goons to wax a couple old guys, just run. Gene Hackman is going to kill you.

Throughout Heist, the tension of an inevitable betrayal remains persistent. All of the characters here have motives and differences, deep character flaws, complex relationships with each other. Watching the events surrounding these characters unfold is an amazing experience. If I could recommend one crime caper above all others, Heist would be it.

The general plot is very good and even though there are tons of twists none feel too over the top or out of place. I think the main problem is some of the dialog. I swear at one point in the film you hear "burned" about 30 times in 2 minutes. It's really repetitive and takes you out of it. Overall it's one of the better Heist movies to recently come out though.

Lesser Mamet is still Mamet. For the first 3/4 this is tight, lithe plot-driven stuff. Of course, with Mamet, plot is character, and the characters are compellingly selfish, nasty and heartless. Never less than entertaining.

The movie is structured pretty well, but it's not nearly as clever as it wants to be. The script tries to be witty, but it comes off as just... unnecessary. Most of the actors just ham it up, and the drama falls flat on its face.

Nothing happens that you couldn't see coming a mile away, unless you've never seen a con/heist movie before. So none of the crosses and double-crosses and secret plans lurking underneath other secret plans really satisfy. The only surprises are the twists you expect that never come. Still, the central heist is somewhat clever and Mamet's dialogue is crisp (assuming you can buy into his style of dialogue). Hackman's always fun to watch. Not a bad movie, but it won't stick with you either.

Has good dialogue in spades, but the plost twists and turns and twists to the point of incomprehensibility; I'm sure if I watched this a few times I could piece together the double- and triple-crosses, and figure out just where the gold is at all times, but this isn't entertaining enough to be worth the effort.

Apart from the overlong conclusion, it was passable entertainment, but Danny Devito really can't pull of menacing in this film. When he appears from behind the crates towards the end - that was hilarious

Although Heist is plagued by lame dialogue and a discordant script, it makes up for it with a generally good plotline and world-class performances by the cast.

The real fun of the thing is the dialogue: terse, repetitive, rhythmical, idiomatic, eminently quotable. More than any excerpt can possibly show, certainly more than any competitive outburst of action, the edge-of-your-seat thrill of the dialogue is in the dazzling athleticism with which the conversational ball is kept in the air, batted back and forth, treated to trick spins and wicked spikes and diving saves, never permitted to touch the ground, never booted away in frustration or disgust.

Something about the dialogue didn't sit right with me, and all of the double crossing made me think that everyone was lying all the time, so I was expecting nothing but more double crosses, and that's a confusing and unpleasant perspective to watch a film from. Still, a pretty strong narrative for a heist flick. Seen 2x

Seen: 2. Everyone is a little too cool, and everyone is a little too smart until it is convenient for them not to be. Scenes are just a bit clunky at times, some proceedings are too cute, and character motivations are questionable. That all being said, the double crosses upon double crosses keep things rolling, and the whole thing kept me guessing as to how in control any one character really was.
