Aims for a somewhat despairing, cutthroat tone, yet only lands a few glancing blows. I was thoroughly engaged the whole time, but the few pleasures the film has to offer - from the occasional badass action beats to the jokingly racist banter - are only intermittently felt throughout. Nevertheless, Pine and Foster share a credible brotherly bond and Bridges plays a better Tommy Lee Jones than Tommy Lee Jones in [insert any Tommy Lee Jones starring movie - other than 'Batman Forever' - here].

not subtle or very well-written (it's sheridan, go figure), with near-KILLING THEM SOFTLY levels of sledgehammer cynicism re: the U$A'n dream, but interesting for how its traditional archetypes fit into & are bred by modern america. a cowboy protects his own via dubiously "noble" lawbreaking, a sheriff serves the exploitative system, the 'indians' and the poor are trampled underfoot, the snake keeps eating its own tail. the difference, this time, is neither gets to enjoy a peaceful retirement.

A fairly competent marriage of a modern crime movie and a western. I wasn't really impressed with Pine, or Foster here, and I'm a fan of both, but Bridges steals the show, especially in conjunction with Birmingham. Still, it's neither as good, or as memorable as most would have you think.

No Country for Old Men or Killing Them Softly by way of the preachy, heavy-handed, psuedointellectual film making of Dope or Ex Machina. At least David Mackenzie's parents both died before they had to face the embarrassment of their son's bullshit direction in this movie.

Solidly made modern western with good acting, some nice set-up & pay-off and lightweight socio-economical subtext. Falls in to too many cliches though and lacks both the philosophical weight of No Country for Old Men & the raw visceral power of something like Sam Peckinpah. Decent if predictable watch though with some nice little touches here & there. Bit comically self-important considering the lack depth & subtlety. Almost like the kind of competent mediocrity the Academy likes to celebrate.

Hell or High Water delivers a modern western where the horses are fifteen-year-old cars and the posse is a troop of concealed carry rednecks. The nod at the sickness that capitalism can bring provides the motive for our gunslingers while they traverse a gorgeously shot great plains. Foster always provides a type of powder-keg-like character, but Pine keeps up and delivers his best performance to date. Bridges, as per usual, screams Americana and chews each scene, slowly.

Great film. This one surprised me a few times. It's got great pacing and it isn't too long or boring. I liked all of the performances and the story as well. I also liked that the movie didn't jump to any cliches like mindless gun violence and worthless characters as an excuse to make a good crime movie. I also found the character development and cinematography to be great. Well-made all around.

Snappy western/thriller; superb casting down the line but anchored by its three leads - Bridges can do 'laconic lawman' in his sleep, but he is great fun to watch; Foster's loose cannon is by turns disturbing and strangely sympathetic; the revelation is Pine, in a superb, understated performance - note the mesmerising climax where a world of emotion plays subtly over his face. Generous tips of the hat to the Coens' NCFOM, and a general inability to break free of genre plot tropes, are forgiven.

"Damn, this is one excellent fucking beer! I hope I NEVER have another one like it!" said no one ever. Yet, somehow the surface similarites between this and No Country is supposed to render it irrelevant even though they have completely different themes. If you're the kind of person who hated 7 Men from Now because it was a western and so was The Man from Laramie, I guess steer clear of HoHW. If you're not some sort of weird ascetic though, have at it.

"No Country for..." was about the wild capitalist turn of 1980s and this 1 is about the 2008 crisis and onwards. Although it achieves to reinterpret western in the contemporary situation with some success, it becomes somehow cheap as it tries to put some subtext (which is more of a supertext) about issues of race, violence and poverty in contemporary US. And I couldn't find a consistent form of narration, nor subtle acting/dialogues. Nice try but could've been waaay better.

Hell or High Water is a quality life drama with elements of a decent modern western, though do not expect too much action. Bridges and Pine add this movie some extra charm, specially Bridges who pushes it on a higher. *spoilers ahead* Would've been nice if we had a gun fight at the end, considering it seems like both of them got nothing to lose, but still this ending was fitting as well.

Fairly solid thriller which doesn't do much that we haven't seen before. It has sufficient of everything - charismatic leads, a grizzled lawman, tension, atmosphere, scenery and music which fits well aesthetically - without ever truly excelling. I suppose the main bit that stands out is the atypical ending - a showdown of words between two poker players who are too smart to call each other's bluff. Well made but lacks the edge-of-the-seat feel of No Country For Old Men or Place Beyond The Pines.

It's rare, only coming along every so often, but I think it's unrivaled in the arts. This is an exceptionally crafted, thoroughly interesting and provoking movie that stays for exactly as long as it should, is performed marvelously by its actors, and is gorgeous to look at and be absorbed by.

This is the best Western I have seen in quite some time. Hell or High Water has an incredibly gripping story and a well-crafted, clever script with plenty of deep character development and exciting action to boot. Chris Pine and Jeff Bridges do fantastic work as a bank robber and a Texas Ranger, respectively, especially in the film's final scene. The action is incredibly well-directed, and I especially liked the film's depiction of the robbers and their incredibly clever methods.

A pair of poor brothers stage a series of bank robberies in order to save the family ranch. Pine, Bridges and Foster are all quite good in this entertaining if cliche'd neo-Western. The plot unfurls slowly, mimicking the sedate pace of West Texas life, and the film does a good job evoking the poverty and desperation that dominates the areas visited. Tack on a pretty fun chase/gunfight and a wonderful coda scene between Bridges and Pine just talking on a porch, and you have a winner.

And great little western/heist/crime flick that tried to philosophize on the things we do for family and love, but missed the mark. Not by much though. Doesn't mean it wasn't a good movie - it was. Chris Pine proves he can act and Ben Foster plays his usual mischievous delinquent to perfection.

'No Country ...' Lite with Bridges performing as 'Rooster Cogburn' Lite. I don't understand why so many sources (Criticker included) give away the reason for the bank robberies in their film synopsis. It doesn't ruin the film but it would play out better not knowing this fact in advance. Some memorable scenes and photography, but overall this is only 'above average'.

Sometimes this feels like a good Coens brother movie. It was a lot funnier than I anticipated, the drama was good enough, and the atmosphere was splendid. It was bolstered by a good soundtrack and a plot that may not have been original, but was certainly well told. It wasn't hell to watch this and instead of high water, it had some high-larity all around! The writing was my favorite part of this movie Taylor Sheridan did a great job and gave the actors some really good dialogue that made you connect with all types of characters. I loved the setting of Texas with its wide open vistas and muted color palate. When there was action, it was really good and some shocking moments came out of those scenes. Jeff Bridges stole the show of course...

With a healthy dose of shoot-outs and getaway scenes that are done in a fairly unique way, Hell or High Water is hard not to enjoy. Its lasting impact may vary from person to person as this is a carefully paced film with nothing too grandiose in its story-telling or cinematic appeal, though it's another satisfying film that's neither a blockbuster nor an awards contender, but it may be better than either. Strong piece of genre filmmaking, with some pointers toward societal and personal injustices that offer some context and setting for the overall story. That said, the film is almost too grim for its own good--even the comic relief (often racist in variety) is appropriately played as a problem that is too often overlooked by those who engage in it. The brothers and the cops are all well played, and the narrative never less than compelling.

There's beautiful cinematography, great performances & compelling characters, unfortunately this film presents some rotten ideas as profundity. The most overt being the horsesh-t myth of the noble & fundamentally decent criminal who's driven into committing armed robbery as a result of poverty. I'm far from PC as well, but having a (frequently-mocked-for-laughs) Native American equate the genocide of his people with banks foreclosing on white homes isn't insightful, but specious.

Aesthetically excellent, with its dusty, aching landscapes smoothly shot, rich soundtrack (a tense piano and strings theme alternates with melancholy folk tunes), charming small-town Texas sets, and Chris Pine with windswept hair. The story feels a little light in comparison (it would have been better to focus more on the compelling brothers and less on the at-times awkward cop duo) but it builds well and comes to a riveting climax (though the denouement leaves something to be desired).

Mackenzie's focus on the story of two brothers robbing banks together...but for different reason is the center of the movie, it has a different meaning than most, as this movie holds little to no action whatsoever, but it does so well without it that you won't notice it during its 100 minute runtime.
