A matchmaker named Dolly Levi takes a trip to Yonkers, New York to see the "well-known unmarried half-a-millionaire," Horace Vandergelder. The story is simple and undeniably lightweight, but this movie is so charming and good-natured that you simply don't care. Streisand's a hoot, Matthau's his usual gruff yet lovable self, and a young Michael Crawford is memorably manic. The songs are hummable, and the dance routines - especially those involving an army of waiters - are absolutely jaw-dropping. Never fails to put me in a good mood.

After being somewhat catapulted back into view after briefly featuring in WALL-E, in reality it's a good humoured and enjoyable musical which knows how to exuberantly make fun of itself and provide some good entertainment in the process. The leading parts are excellent, with Streisand providing the musical elements, Matthau being his usual likeable grump and Crawford providing his own distinctive injection of humour. I know it's equally campy and cheesy, in this context it doesn't really matter.

I loved it way more than I thought I would. Streisand was a riot.

Lavish, luxuriant and a great family film. Barbara Streisand was made for this part with strong support from Walter Matthau and Michael Crawford. Some very impressive set piece numbers and great cinematography. Costumes are marvellous and Yonkers has never looked so attractive. The score is infectious and the number with Louis Armstrong is just the best !

Underrated. I generally dislike musicals so it's likely that I'm the one overrating it because I found one I actually like.

Streisand's role is like tailor-made for her. Funny, charming and lovely.

The last hurrah of the classic Hollywood musical. Songs are variable, but Kelly works hard to provide compensations for the weaknesses of the score. Themes are the thirst for adventure and the bittersweet virtues of kinship relations. Streisand, Matthau, Michael Stewart, Ernest Lehman, Jerry Herman, Michael Kidd, Lionel Newman, Lennie Hayton, David Hurst: how many of these, if any, had any ancestors living in the United States (or outside Russia, Poland, Germany, Lithuania or Ukraine) in 1890?

Look, I don't demand a lot in terms of plot and characterization in a musical with great hats and tunes I can remember the next day (even if Streisand trying to sing with Armstrong was toecurling). But this movie gives no explanation for why Dolly wants to marry Horace. He's rude, cheap and only wants a wife to do the chores. Not to mention Streisand is a fine figure of a woman, while Matthau already looked like a basset hound. He's rich, BUT SO IS SHE! It's beyond stupid and into mindboggling.

So unbelievably cheesy, and the only word to describe Crawford and Lockin is doofus--in a cringe-worthy way. The dance scenes are extravagant and one or two songs are catchy, but that doesn't make up for the fact that Matthau does not belong within the same country as a musical. On top of that this is proof in my bafflement of how Streisand became famous, as a singer or as an actress. The worst part is it reminisces too much of those kids in high school drama club I was embarrassed just to see.

Somewhat uneven but probably the last of the big old-time Hollywood musicals. The brief scene with Streisand and Louis Armstrong singing the title cut is a classic.

"More infamous for bringing Fox financially to its knees than for being the last major musical directed by Gene Kelly, Dolly! is one big-assed bull in a china shop." - Eric Henderson

Funny little film with a lot of famous and hummable songs. The big-city adventure of one Cornelius Hackl makes for fun family-time watching.

It's not one of my favorite musicals to begin with, and as much as I love Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau cannot carry a tune, and they should have cut more material, because even though it's a good length for a stage show, this feels as long as it is in movie form.

I love Gene Kelly but I hate Streisand even more. She can't even lip-sync to her own singing.

The charisma that Barbra Streisand exudes is unmatchable. Also Cornelius and Barnaby are gay. That is just a fact. Gene Kelly, you and I sure love those dance sequences
