I loved the first two acts of the film, where this was a dark family drama that used the the language of the horror genre as a metaphor for how hereditary (get it?) mental health conditions such as DID and Schizophrenia often get awakened inside people during times of extreme trauma. But then the last act turned into a typical, albeit well-made and mostly cliche-less, horror film. So much potential and great ideas that almost clicked together into a masterpiece but not quite.

What an absolutely haunting cinematic experience. Disturbing on so many levels and leaves a permanent mark into the viewer's subconsciousness. If you're looking for straight-up easily digested spooks, this is not the movie for you. The true horror comes from psychological anguish rather than the few supernatural occurrences in the film. If the ending dialogue had been cut out (as it only served to be a recap for "you dumdums that don't get what's happening") it would have ended with more oomph.

This is definitely not a main stream horror movie. The Mystery Machine won't be showing up at the end, where the gang pulls off the mask off the monster, to reveal it was old man Farnham all along! It's more of a an unwinding cryptic puzzle, that can only be solved once the film ends. I had to retroactively go back and connect the dots to understand it. Great acting and cinematography, and the influence of older horror films can be seen throughout.

Everything that makes a great movie was there and I realize how well it was made. The first half of the movie was creepy and effective, but I find horrors that rely this much on supernatural scares, especially near the end, are not as scary to me.

Hereditary is a well-made horror film that I decidedly did not enjoy. Collette delivers a terrific performance, by which I mean she is unhinged & terrifying; purposefully so. Wolff on the other hand was an unsympathetic lead, making it hard to connect to film. The first "shock" scene was masterfully paced & executed, but it was downhill from there. What follows is a slow-paced film that only offers a tense atmosphere, and by the time the finale revelation came round my patience had fully waned.
