The plot is full of digressions, weird/funny scenes, at times verging on nonsensical. But you've got John Woo's gunfights. A "So Bad It's Good" film. It's also a precursor of some sort to the far, far superior "Bullet in the Head" (similar setting, genre, themes).

There's a couple great scenes, primarily the gambling one, but it really didn't do anything to get me interested. Ultimately pretty bland, aside from the part where an American soldier blows himself up with a suicide vest because he wants to redeem himself for being a deserter.

WHY IS THERE SO MUCH FUCKING PLOT IN THIS MOVIE I'M SERIOUSLY YOU GUYS! What a beautiful (tonal) mess. There's gotta be (or have been) a longer version of this. Way longer. One that, you know, fills all the gaps. Or maybe just some of them.

Starts out comically stupid, like a bad parody of bad American action movies. And then, as the pointless, wanton, style-less murder and destruction piled on and on it just became depressing and unpleasant to watch. I like gunfire and explosions...but not like this. Though I have to admit that final desperate, savage throwdown was pretty cool. More of that, and less "dudes standing in fields waving their guns around", would have gone a long way.

Featuring almost nonstop action there is enough to enjoy. Made years before but only released after the succes of A Better Tomorrow, it shows Woo already knew how to film action like few others can. All this wall-to-wall action of course means the plot is paper thin. Starring a brotherhood of eccentric fighters with lots of self-sacrifice, Woo's familiar themes are also present. Eddy Ko is tremendously cool, plus it features the coolest toughest kid since Lone Wolf's cub.
