Cool set designs are the predominant element of interest. The music is decent, best of all in the epilogue.

A betrothed woman is drawn to a less conventional man, but discovers that his soul is enveloped in darkness and secrets. Believing that her light can banish his shadows, she insists that he reveal everything, but fails to recognise that getting five sevenths of the story was probably a good deal. Consequently, she is brought to the realisation that a man's ex-lovers are all in one way or another murder victims, sacrificed to become ghostly relics occupying the empty rooms of cold-hearted memory.

Compulsory viewing for anyone who loves this opera, as I do. The expressionist design works beautifully to highlight the psychological aspect of the drama. But did it have to be SO psychological as to eliminate the keys to the doors they keep singing about altogether? Rather strange. Norman Foster was an excellent singer. And Ms. Satre... well, she LOOKED fabulous, anyway.
