What's refreshing about Hesher is that the guy is obviously a total psychopath and asshole. He's not some charmer who teaches the protagonist the meaning of life through harmless quirk, but a dangerous guy with little to no regard for self or others. And still, in the depths of grief, TJ can't help but latch onto this twisted model of livelihood. It's pretty funny, and Levitt and Portman, as the misplaced target of TJ's affections, are great. Also nice to see Rainn Wilson underplay things.

Further proof that Joseph Gordon-Levitt can do anything. Rainn Wilson gives a surprisingly sensitive performance as the father of the young protagonist, also well-played by Devin Brochu. Like JGL's character, the film is sort of out there, different and weird yet always interesting and at times pretty funny.

Like this idea that we search for meaning in all the wrong places -- there are no real lessons to be had from this drug-addled, violent, lecherous psychopath, but that doesn't keep us from searching for something noble and wise driving his reckless insanity -- but the film does tend to over-sentimentalize the proceedings. Portman and Gordon-Levitt are pretty great.

Quite disappointed, I expected this movie to be funnier than this. I wasn't prepared for this overly dramatic story. Hesher was pretty cool though, shame the movie didn't revolve around him.

A very strange movie. The message is live life in the moment, be true to yourself, get past your grief and appreciate what you have, but I'm surprised to get that from this near train wreck of a character. Hesher is unbounded, irreverent and almost completely out of control, but somehow manages to turn up at the right time and place, and the chaos he brings somehow helps the damaged people around him to heal. Definitely a wild story with potholes, but strangely worth the crazy ride.

Having directionless characters does not mean you can get away with having a directionless film. 'Hesher' is a poorly imagined realisation of a premise that had potential.

Hesher is an angry, violent transient who insinuates himself into the lives of a grieving boy and his father. Amidst the chaos and despair, he somehow teaches them to cope. A pretty interesting idea, and the script has several great scenes but there's not a lot in the way of structure. It's all about JGL tearing up the screen with his deft performance, ranging from vulgar bullying and explosive outbursts to heartfelt tenderness. The bong scene is an emotional highlight.

Hesher is distasteful, inconsiderate, abrasive, and awesome in every was possible. He is quite possibly one of the best characters ever to exist. I defy you to watch this movie and afterward not say "I wish I was more like Hesher."

I enjoyed a lot of things about Hesher but the standout was the acting. Everyone was just great, on the top of their games. JGL was absolutely brilliant. His speeches were glorious; darkly comedic but meaningful. Good film that could have been amazing with a little more editing and polish.

Hipster Jesus (Pabst Blue Ribbon anyone?) descends into the life of a crestfallen family to dispense his peculiar brand of vigor. Tasty chaos ensues. Gotta love JGL for taking on roles like these and completely nailing them; when Hesher smirks, it's seemingly the pleasure for his work seeping through onto the screen.

I just couldn't buy anything that was happening in this movie. Why did no one call the cops on Hesher? Why did Natalie Portman (playing at least an early 20s character) care that much about what a middle school kid thought of her? I am supposed to believe Portman isn't beautiful just because she has incredibly dorky glasses on and a ponytail? If it wasn't for the very good acting I would have hated it. As it stands, I thought it was a decent movie that some people are going to love.

JGL is great as Hesher, but a few good scenes with him is not enough to bring it up higher than above average. Natalie Portman suffers from the pretty girl with ponytail and glasses trying to look ugly syndrome as seen in Not Another Teen Movie... All in all an enjoyable dark comedy with a great use of Hesher to embody the young T.J.'s anger of having lost his mother...

A meandering and pointless rip-off of Bad Santa... or it would be if JGL didn't deliver such a knockout performance. And that really makes you forgive and forget all the (very many!) faults plaguing this flick. A real fun ride. And really probably the best movie about metalheads out there.

This film's ugly in a beautiful way. There's all these distraught people with terrible lives, and here comes this sociopath who looks like Jesus to confuse and bewilder them and maybe help them out a little bit. He tells obscene stories and has no background. It's an underdeveloped and awkward but nevertheless sort of effective black comedy.

The title character is imagined, performed and written fantastically well. This unique character would work well in almost any film or scenario. This obvious fact works slightly to the detriment of the other characters who aren't anywhere nearly as well developed and the primary themes and plot themselves. While overall it still works very well, it could have been so much better had it been given a bit more focus, secondary character development, and fewer extraneous moments. Still, a good film.

Having a film with both Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman in it was definitely a draw-card for me. I don't know if I quite bought Gordon-Levitt as the character, but he was a fun and interesting to watch. Anyway, I enjoyed it. Utterly strange, confounding creation centering on a go-for-broke portrait of madness (?) from Gordon-Levitt, who attacks the role as part Tom Green, part Nicolas Cage in daffy mode. The peculiar sensibilites elicted (intentional?) laughter, but it is ultimately unclear what the point of the story is, so the final impact rings hollow (though it has a killer of a closing shot!) Will certainly be a film to return to.

Jgl is great as hesher, ever unpredictable, through the whole movie you hope he will be a good thing in the young boy's life, but the more crazy, outrageous stuff he does the more you start to doubt if he has any good intentions or that he's just a weird parasite. I cheered at so many memmorable scenes, It has all the ingredients; laugh out loud, painfull to watch, tearing up. It was instantly one of my favorite movies.

Very off--Sunset Blvd. story about an anarchist (brilliantly played, as usual, by J G-L) who moves in uninvited with a newly dysfunctional family as a result of the death of the mother. Levitt becomes the kid's guardian angel....from hell, and is unexpectedly softened to a degree by the grandmother. Portman, in her apparent effort to set a record for film appearances in a year, has a small but well played pivotal role. Pushes most people's limits for decorum--but given the subject matter....

Pretty well done if Jesus walks the Earth variation. The small boy did not cope till the end, but other leads worked fine. Sure there was some rough stuff needed a bit polishing - like a bit lame ending - but I liked it as it was. It was nice to see Twin Peaks oldie, Piper Laurie on screen again.

Better than I was expecting, though it is still pretty loaded with its fair share of Sundance-indie-movie bullshit. The biggest problem is probably with the casting; Gordon-Levitt is comically wrong for the part, his scrawny little frame & dopey tattoos & wig are not threatening at all, & Portman just looks like a movie star hiding behind frumpy glasses, though she gives a decent performance. But I did find some emotional resonance, & it's good in the moments when it transcends its shortcomings.

A difficult-to-like film with a schizophrenic personality; at times TJ's life is amusing and compelling, at other times difficult emotional issues are treated with great solemnity, and the rest of the time is filled with outrageous random acts of mayhem and disrespect. It's different, but often, you feel, just for the sake of being different. This director shows potential but would probably do better within rigid genre confines, rather than writing his own playbook.

Ugh, this movie was disappointing. The movie just doesn't make sense. Events transpire in such a frustrating manner that I don't buy any of it. Devin Brochu, the young lead actor, is pretty good though. I guess my biggest problem with a movie named Hesher is that I hated the character named Hesher.

Hesher is an interesting movie, and it had a lot of potential, but it wasn't executed very well. A story about a random homeless guy in his mid 20s, who hangs around a high school a lot for some reason, using a vulnerable kid at least ten years younger than him for shelter, food, a girl to have sex with, and who knows what else. A few good moments do not outshine a terribly corny ending that doesn't fit the rest of the film. No idea why Portman's character hangs around so often. JGL's character is a stoned 13 year old's dream, which is embarrassing

Something about the unpretentious rhythm and acting gives this movie the right to call itself independent. If the character of the grandmother and her relationships with the other characters had been developed a bit further, some of the points that the movie is trying to make would have been strengthened. Then the movie could have become more real and could really touch a certain spot that it now merely scrapes. Still, I thought it was both entertaining and meaningful.

More drama than expected. I didn't care too much about the misadventures of Little Emo Boy when Hesher himself is so much more interesting to follow. The end result is quite hard to rate, and even though the directing is pretty good and most of the acting was solid it just missed something that really engaged me.

"Hesher" is good fun. While it does have an undeniable lack of structure, reality and depth, the entertaining cast married with Susser's generally smart direction, for the most part make up for it. There are certainly a couple of really funny scenes, and the movies final few minutes are really nice. Highlight for me was probably Rainn Wilson, who gets a little bit lost amid the destruction caused by JGL and Brochu, but I enjoyed his performance.

Before this had come out, one of my friends dubbed it "Metal Mary Poppins". Sure, there are some of the elements there (and it's a hilarious comparison), but I think that this film was Levitt just wanting to play a role that he thought was hilarious more than anything else. Wilson and the surprising Brochu, along with JGL's performance are definitely the highlights of the film, though it is a bit uneven and just kinda there. Also, any sountrack with old Metallica and Motorhead is worth it.

I keep coming back to this film over and over again for some reason. Every time I watch it, new things introduce themselves. Small expressions that expose untold feelings, framing that juxtaposes warmth and nihilism, pain that envelopes you in unique but realistic ways. At first I ignored these things in my search for subtext, but the true greatness of this film was already on screen.

A film full of sad people and great one-liners. Seriously, JGL spouts some hilarious stuff. While these bits are entertaining, the Hallmark turn at the end with the random acts of violence that proceed it don't really make a very believable or coherent film. JGL, Portman, and Rainn Wilson though...you have to watch it for those three alone.
