Hex

Uneven ghost film that manages to entertain even when it can't quite figure out what type of movie it wants to be. The acting is generally over the top but not too terrible. The directing is very in your face and only works about half the time. The budget is low but the effects are pretty decent for the most part.

Begins as Diabolique if Diabolique fully embraced its supernatural dimension; then becomes softcore; ends as Kwaidan. The comment and visualization of domestic violence is still shocking, and is the film's greatest asset, because it's the only available subtext. Everything else is exhibitionism.

Some AMAZING acting performances! Wait for the demonic dancing scene of Ni Tien at the third act.

This just didn't work for me. I even gave it a re-watch to ensure I didn't miss anything. The 1st part resembles Diabolique in a Shaw setting, and was quite well made. It then adds horror elements with plenty of goo and blood, and ends with a long (nude) exorcism sequence that I didn't expect to see in a Shaw film. I never really got into the film; it didn't feel consistent and had a pretty cringe-worthy comedic scene in the middle. The final twist was pretty clever, if not entirely believable.
