Hey Good Lookin'

The main problem with Bakshi is he aims at social critique in a form close to the work of Crumb, but it always comes up short in profundity and gonzo style. He's usually a master of making an enjoyable mess, but this contains neither an awesome premise (Wizards), a surrealist remembrance of an era (Heavy Traffic), a simple, enjoyable story (Fire & Ice) or the best of his wackiest works (Fritz / Coonskin). It's ranges from bland to annoying, with an incredibly obnoxious secondary character.

Movie was just over an hour which was the perfect length before I became too uncomfortable with Bakshis grotesque animation.

Close, but no cigar to Bakshi's masterworks, but he has worse in his filmography and this is definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of the man -- uncompromising, often brutal, yet exaggerated and violently comical portrayal of the '50s (apparently the way they really were). There's plenty of shabbiness to let this down, in animation and characterisation/story development, but this still rings out as a compelling tale of da yoof of this time and era.
