Viggo Mortensen seems like the kind of guy that would be really nice to the guy who had to clean up all the horse droppings.

One of the legion of Disney sports films feeds the current hunger (to put it as crudely as it merits) to kick some Arab butt. Spurred on by the blustery music of James Newton Howard, horse and rider outrun a computer-generated desert tsunami (curse of The Mummy), dodge a couple of cartoon leopards (sons of Gladiator), and tilt into a three-way photo finish after a race of three thousand miles. Fact-check, anyone?

It's not the worst movie of all time, but I certainly thought it was a bit of a disappointing entry for Mortensen after coming off Aragorn.

This is the kind of thing that critics refer to as "by-the-numbers" - you pretty much know how it's going to end when you see the poster, and while it's not bad movie it certainly doesn't do much more than fulfill expectations.

The filmmakers were probably thinking, "It will be like Lord of the Rings, but in a desert." They underestimated the lack of chemistry between Viggo Mortenson and the horse, as well as their ability to throw together a film that kept me interested.

Victor Moralsomethingson rides an epic journey in a quest to bring lost glory to the Western genre by infusing Oriental hardship with Native American wisdom. Pity the story is only a ghostly apparition of reality.

If it weren't so Disney at some points, this could've been a great movie. Instead, we have to settle on a good Viggo performance and some humorous moments. The horse just gets out of hand sometimes.

The elements of this film ranks from 'fine' to 'abysmal' in the sense that parts of the cinematography was very decent, for example, while various characters (from the little slave-helper over the arabian clown-assistent to the outright boooring villains, etc.) were extremely poorly drawn. I guess Viggo was allright, kept his composure in the middle of a cast that mostly resembled a pile of shit. And all the shots of the clearly exaggeratedly clever horse... just bad. Poor.

Based on a true story, an old fashioned Boy's Own adventure with antiquated attitudes and stereotypes in keeping with its style -- except that in the past it would have been cut to a more pleasing ninety minutes.

Not just bad and dumb, as if that wasn't enough, but it manages to be disgustingly racist also. Why is this not considered a modern minstrel show? Oh, right, 9/11.

I love Viggo Mortenson and the relationship he had with his horse is really powerful in this film. It is a simple adventure movie at heart and the action is only so-so, but i like this movie, probably more than i should because of Viggo alone.

Hidalgo needed a better editor. Had one been hired, it would have been an excellent film that I'd recommend to everyone. As it is, it's a pretty good adventure film that goes on for too long thanks to its many pointless moments. But it still has a great deal of adventure and action scenes that will keep you entertained, as well as a few heartfelt moments that will make you emotional. It's still worth your time, even if there might be times where you'll question why certain scenes were included.

This cartoonish and by-the-numbers Hollywoodisation bears little relevance to the appealing mythologies of cowboys and horses upon which it's sold. It's simply not serious enough to say anything worthwhile, tending towards black and white depictions of heroism and villainy mixed with a plethora of implausible stunt sequences. Even the title character, Hidalgo the horse, has no personality - Mr Ed could have done a better job of giving the equine profession a good name.

Hidalgo surprised me. I didn't expect Viggo Mortensen to click in the cowboy role, or the thought of a cowby in Arabia to work. Fortunatly he did, and it did, and Hidalgo is a touching tale.

If this focused on the horse race I may have liked it a lot more. It's just trying too hard to be adventurous when a more stripped-down tone would have done the job fine. I really love Viggo Mortensen, he elevates almost everything he is in, so I can't hate this.

Grandly entertaining, old-fashioned adventure saga; with Sharif around wearing his experience in this genre like a badge of honour, and Mortensen's Indy-like lead, this is rip-roaring fun for about an hour; the second hour stumbles somewhat, becoming a little laboured and repetitive once again proving the adage that if the audience knows where your tale is headed, try and get out after an hour 40 and change! Could have done with less of the Flipper-like horse reaction shots!
