Hide and Seek

2005
Drama
Suspense/Thriller
1h 41m
This is the story of a young girl named Emily Callaway, which her games of Hide and Seek with an imaginary friend by the name of "Charlie" have become anything but simple and innocent. Instead, she finds herself in the middle of a series of increasingly nightmarish acts that even her father David cannot stop. Who--or what--is Charlie?! David wonders. How can an..."imaginary" entity have this kind of hold on her? Maybe Charlie is not imaginary at all, but instead a flesh-and-blood, malevolent presence? (imdb)

God awfully stupid horror film, with a twist so mindbogglingly idiotic it's been known to cause brain haemorrhages in mice (No, I can't back that up). Robert De Niro is trying to punish us all. I just... for the life of me ... can't see what it is we've done wrong to deserve this film.

Such a boring, bland movie. No scares, no suspense and the twist is handled ridiculously. It's not even a twist because the movie sucks, it's more like a casual unveiling that nobody cares about.

it's a decent movie with a solid, endearing performance by Deniro and a sufficiently creeping performance by Fanning until the lame ending sucks most of the potential out of this movie. Not as bad as its reputation.

Dakota Fanning is compelling. The rest of the movie is just an OK thriller that becomes very silly by the end.

Surprisingly watchable considering I knew the twist going in. The first film where I actually "got" why everyone thinks so highly of Dakota Fanning. I actually went without the urge to strangle her for once.

Silly but enjoyable horror potboiler is well crafted and even relatively suspenseful, right up to the both inevitable and logically baffling "plot twist"; it makes little sense and leaves far too many loose and pointless red herrings hanging. Clearly Polson loves ROSEMARY'S BABY and THE SHINING but he can craft a pretty good horror outing out of very little; De Niro is far from peak, but his underplayed "normal" guy is endearing and Fanning's reliably mature performance is an expected highlight.

I really love Robert De Niro, but he doesn't work for me in a horror movie at all. He seems like an ill fit here, while Dakota Fanning channels a spooky kid admirably enough. The whole movie could have been cut way shorter and still made work, at least in the extent of just how it really works. That twist towards the end actually made me laugh, because it was just so weird that it felt like the whole plot of the movie lapsed into comedy right there. No horror or thrills here.

I'm the worst at guessing the twist in a film (which is certainly a good thing) but anyone could've seen this one coming just from reading the basic plot premise. It's so shitting obvious. Watching this film just feels like a chore.

"Hide and Seek" is a taut thriller that benefits a lot from the very fine performances of Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning. An overall decent, yet flawed, middle-of-the-road horror flick.

Not terrible, but not great either. Dakota Fanning sure is making a name for herself, even though she isn't even a teenager yet! She will have better roles in the future, and DeNiero certainly has played in better movies in his time.

The definition of "contrived." About as plausible as it was original...with DeNiro miscast (except I suppose in the last part); the role could've used somebody less recognizable. Dakota was good--but seriously, never once did she say "But Daddy, it's you"?! Only the low-keyness offered a bit of saving grace; there were no doors slamming (and cannons going off) in the soundtrack, and no tracking shots on a luge plummeting headlong toward doors and the like.

I do not know why every body seems to hate this movie. I enjoyed it. Of course not because De Niro but because Fannings character. She looks to be some kind of a horror-monster-child (Ring or something) but then she isn't. Good enough twist for me. Really liked the doll-scene.

With Dakota Fanning at the peak of her popularity, Hollywood cast her alongside Robert DeNiro in what could have been a career defining moment for both. Instead Hide and Seek plays out as a ridiculous psychological thriller that only manages legs due to Fanning's performance and a few decent set pieces.

Of the several possible ways for the plot to go, it would be hard to pick a worse. A classy cast -- Robert De Niro, Famke Janssen, Elisabeth Shue, Dylan Baker, Melissa Leo, not counting a newly dark-haired Dakota Fanning -- in a workaday potboiler.

Fanning is good and De Niro okay in this horror/thriller that destroys any of its potential with an unoriginal twist and increasingly ridiculous final 20 minutes that follow. You kinda know something bad's coming but it's still a shame as the hunk of the film is surprisingly watchable, the direction and steady-paced story helping to create good atmosphere and tension.

A pretty poor horror movie. The premise is nice enough, and the cinematography is ok, even though it initially looks as if it is going to be a bad re-hash of Pan's Labyrinth. Shocks/surprises are in short supply, and the inevitably twist is not that twist-y, while the climax is distinctly anti-climactic, and the final scenes dispiritingly predictable.
