High Plains Drifter (1973)
A stranger rides out of the hot desert into a small town in the wild west. The towns people are scared of him, and 3 gunmen try, unsuccessfully, to kill him. He takes a room and decides to stay. This is a fairly typical Clint Eastwood Western. Its pretty gritty at times, with some violent acts depicted, including bloody violence and torture. I like the idea of a character who is an unknown and certainly, of course, Eastwood does well portraying one, known only as 'The Stranger'. This film is another reminder that sometimes its whats not said that speaks more to a viewer, than what is.

|
A mysterious drifter rides into town, and a surreal sequence plays out. He can kill, rape, control everyone and everything with impunity, even destroy everything and everyone without consequence. It gets a few points for trying to do something smart, novel and stylized, but it fails in execution. The plot has too many holes to be taken seriously. It achieves nothing particularly worthwhile. It's just comes off as gross, despicable and pretty sad considering what it could have been.

A fascinating examination of the legacy of The Man With No Name, casting Clint as a demonic harbinger of destruction, a wholly ruthless anti-hero with a startling mean streak. Stringing together Western iconography with overtly hellish imagery, the film presents a dark, supernatural spin on a familiar story, distorting the genre into a vicious takedown of the blocks on which it is built. Its depiction of sexual assault as something women enjoy and desire is seriously unpleasant, however.

A lot of this is really good--mystery man emerges from a mirage to take vengeance on those responsible for a death. Eastwood lets a lot of the pictures do the talking--I think the first word isn't spoken for more than seven minutes into the film. However, the film's biggest problem is its treatment of women. I get that they would be easily mistreated in that patriarchal world, but do we really need to see rape as the key to female enlightenment and freedom?

Filmen är intressant framför allt genom att den är så annorlunda än sina föregångare bland western-filmerna. John Ford berättade sedelärande historier om ont och gott medan Eastwoods "hjälte" är en amoralisk hämnare rätt och slätt. Den känns samtidigt lätt bedagad och det är svårt att tänka sig att den skulle spelas in idag. Våldtäkten i början av filmen är ganska svårsmält och skulle sannolikt ge upphov till (välmotiverade) protester.@Bryant Park

What prevents this from being amazing is just that it's slow at the beginning and a little derivative. Eastwood's character is impossible to like but when the movie ends you realize that's kind of the point: as others have noted, it's both surreal and a horror western. The plot twist is obvious, but since it's a ghost revenge tale, it makes sense that he's an unflinching bastard with a singular purpose. I also love the eerie choice of music that plays occasionally. Excellent cinematography.

Eastwood proves himself as a man whose talents in the Western genre aren't limited to one side of the camera. 'Drifter' is engaging as the cynical tale of an avenging spirit with supernatural subtext... it's just a shame that it couldn't avoid archaic misogyny and some absurdity in the process.
