Bogie and Ida are in flying form and both give defining performances, but Walsh’s pacing is all over the place, with meanders and sidetracks and non sequitors that undercut the intensity of its crucial moments. I readily admit that may be its point - these are people who know death is coming and choose to live on their B- but not A-plots to pretend their lives have more meaning. Zero the dog is the MVP - both a harbinger of death and Instagram-worthy foil to our cursed leads.

This movie is fairly flawed, sometimes the acting is awkward (except Bogart who is brilliant) but it has a certain spirit that I cannot deny. Earle is outside of any moral characterisation, he's a criminal who does what he has to, but he is also loyal, honest and obviously has some kind of heart as far as outlaws go. But he is ultimately trapped, neither in this camp nor the other, and seeks to 'crash' (break free). Here's the beginnings of moral ambiguity in gangsta films.

Bogart and Lupino make something out of an otherwise mundane gangster script, but ultimately the film settles into "solidly good" territory and stays there all the way through. There's an undertone of comedy that doesn't mesh well with the rest of it but it's an enjoyable film.

A merely okay crime flick. Bogart is Bogart, and gives a fine performance. But the stupid romantic subplot, racial stereotyping, and so on, are pretty big marks against it.

After a decade of playing a supporting role in other people's crime flicks, Bogart got his first chance to play the lead at age 40. Much of his star persona emerges fully intact. It's an interesting amalgam of a film ... part gangster film, part western and part proto-film noir ... and Bogart's reserved laconic charm suits the film. He has magnificent chemistry with Lupino too. Cornel Wilde has his first credited role as a nitwit casino employee who's in on the robbery.

Excellent caper flick with incredible tension and a great Bogey performance. Parts of it are pretty dated, though.

Lupino's a bit over the top, but the nice surprise is Joan Leslie, to whom I guess I didn't pay much attention when I first saw this at age fifteen but wow. This is a flawed film; there is some over-acting pretty much on everyone's parts, but it is fun to watch and it has some really good moments. Score inflated for the Bogart factor.

One of the first of his kind. Watching Bogart pet a dog is cute as fuck.

Very good. Performances are all good and it does an admirable job of maintaining momentum and building suspense towards what's going to happen. It doesn't do a whole lot special in terms of the way it's shot but it also didn't get in the way of the story, which is interesting and well written. Also has a dog in it that is in more than one scene, which is nice.

Didn't find the film as compelling as Bogart's other stuff. The romance subplots progressed way too fast to justify the unbearable melodrama that came along with them. The redeeming factor was the on-location shots -- having stayed in Lone Pine and Whitney Portal, it was interesting to see those locations from nearly 80 years ago.

Overrated. Not a patch on the better noirs of the time, with or without Bogart.

Bogey is Bogey and there's never anything wrong with him, yet somehow I feel like there wasn't really anything to sink my teeth into. I felt like the first half was rather pointless and then when it gets to the last twenty minutes it was so predictable that every ounce of enjoyability is kind of just wrung out of it like an old sponge.

This one has the look, the actors, the setting, plot and music to be an all-time classic but it fell short for me. I guess I didn't care about any of the character enough.

Bogart and Lupino are wonderful, and the directing is both taut and compassionate.

Final chase scene aside a pretty full movie. For being one of bogart’s lauded roles it didn’t do anything for me which is part of his charm

Interesting shift from gangster movie to proto-noir, with a caper, a dame, and a dog. Bogart is good as a mostly-washed-up criminal and the location shot for the final sequence is quite powerful, but everything else has a "yeah, I've already seen that" feel.

Bogart is in fine form, as is a young Ida Lupino. There's some wonderful touches, like the canine harbinger of doom, and the sweet girl showing signs of corruption. The air of melancholy is palpable, as aging Roy Earle is torn between two worlds. And some of the dialogue really pops. But it's still far from a perfect film. There's a few nice shots, but most of the photography is pretty bland. I also find it all a bit slow, although it's really more a character study than a crime drama.

Flawed but very enjoyable with Bogart being about as awesome as anyone can be. Ending is great and iconic but I wasn't crazy about the love subplots. An important film and obviously a stepping stone for many of my favorite gangster films. The car chases and the black character were hilariously bad/great.

Wonderful film. How could it not be with moody Bogart alongside moody Lupino?? OK, there are a few unbelievable plot points, such as Bogart not falling for Lupino immediately (instead of being forced to after being rejected by Leslie), or street-wise Lupino falling so co-dependently for him. Otherwise this is must-see for any fans of Lupino, Bogart, or film noir. It's gritty, it's real, it's classic. It's Bonnie & Clyde 26 years before Beatty and Dunaway.

This movie really picks up when the heist happens. Humphrey Bogart gives another great performance, he is the reason to watch this movie. The script has some good ideas and it has a few slow moments. You should definitely check this film out if you are a fan of Humphrey Bogart.

An overrated Bogart vehicle where Bogart's questionable acting skills are apparent, utterly embarrassing both as a melodrama and in its silly heist scenes.

The broad comedy with the Algernon character really takes away from what is in many ways a fascinating study of an aging criminal. Bogart's Earle carries the veneer of having it all together, but his actions prove otherwise--his pursuit of the "pure" Velma, his attempt to distance himself from the "faithless" Marie, and his weakened sensibilities about who to include in the heist and the getaway. Earle is a man beyond his time--the world has passed him by, even the world of crime.

The allure is Humphrey Bogart unglamorous portrayal of a hardened gangster. Human enough to go soft, but always the loyal tough guy, knowing where he really stands. It's a shame him and Ida Lupino didn't get along well, for they're great together. Outcasts, but right for each other. While the film tries a little too hard to be good, there is always a sinister look on Bogart's face carrying his destructive path towards a thrilling climax. Bogart is a star now. So is
